  • Just occurred to me that there may be people reading this thread who are more sensitive to the cold so it might be worth saying that while it may be a good idea to hold back on the heating a bit do not risk your health. Get a room thermometer and do not let the temperature drop into the danger zone- get a free thermometer from helptheaged etc. and if the temperature goes too low no matter how you feel put the heating on as your health has GOT to come first.;)

A VERY good point.... we have a nursery thermometer downstairs (still there from last year when I was overly-paranoid about the cold!) once it starts to get to the blue stage, I'll think about putting the heating on. Its only DS I worry about, OH doesn't feel the cold (he will fall asleep on the sofa with the back door wide open), I can wrap up and the dog (un-surprisingly!) has a fur coat! Thankfully DS is running around a lot at the mo, so its just after baths in the evening I need to be careful...

    Stay warm everyone!!!

  • Ok yes I put the timer to come on for couple of hours early morning. So it warm for kids gettin ready for school.

I have clicked it on tonight as well, after all I may as well warm house AND dry washing ;) better than using tumble dryer. Hate using that but have one just in case it's needed. Used it twice last winter :o

  • I have weakened. It has got cold tonight mainly because of the wind blowing. I put it on for 30 mins. ds still keeps putting the electric heater on in his bedroom, he has offered money for the electric meter which I have refused so far. But if it keeps going into emergency every day that's £5 a day I might have to take him up on the offer.

I've set the timer to come on at 4am for 30 minutes to take the chill of the air when Wayne gets up at 4.30am.

In an evening, we'll sit in the kitchen whilst cooking dinner then head into the living room with the curtains closed tight and a duvet apiece to snuggle under.

The cats make me laugh though, they'll come into the living room on an evening and sit in front of the fire then look at us as if to say "come on it's blimming freezing here, put the fire on" before they decide to curl up at the side of one of either of us.

We were tempted to put the electric blanket on the bed, but I realised that I need the electrics checking so put a single 10tog duvet between the mattress and the sheet. It's really snug and lovely now and I reckon we'll do without the electric blanket until December (or possibly completely without).

When I went to Krakow & Prague (in winter, -19C) we bought some thermal underwear - think long sleeved tops and long-johns! I'm finding that these under my normal clothes are enough to keep me fairly warm and a nice pair of thick woollen socks just completes the picture!

I'm holding out until November before the heating gets turned on in an evening, but I'm sorely tempted to see just how long we can hold out for!

We must be hardy up here in Scotland.
Last winter the temperature in the bedroom was 6C a couple of nights and we still just made do with an electric blanket and a cuddle.
But I don't know about this year. DH died suddenly in June so I guess it will be me and the cats.

I have now caved in too  I was freezing and as DS (age 3) insists on being up at 6am and running round half naked I thought it was best.

I did go and stand in the kitchen the other evening as I was cooking a casserole and it was toasty in there.

I'll be caving in soon I think. Have a lovely fleecy throw and a cuddly hotwater bottle that kept me snug last night while watching television. Not so easy in the morning when you have to move round though. I've got a wall heater in the bathroom, so have been doing all my naked stuff in there!!

We had ours on yesterday for 30 minutes as even with my fleece and hot water bottles I couldn't get warm!

  • We very nearly put it on yesterday as it was freezing, but once Id cooked dinner it warmed up a bit. Luckily the kids hands and feet are still toasty warm and they insisted on running round with just a tshirt on! We're going to hold of a little bit longer but once the kiddies feel the cold it'll have to go on, but just little at a time.

This time last year it was on loads but we lived in a huge victorian maisonette with really bad single glazed windows with gaps around the sides which the wind used to blow the blinds up! And a big gap on the bottom of the back door. It was rented.
But now we've bought a smaller terraced house fully double glazed and we feel a huge difference. Compared to all our family we're the only ones who havent put the heating on yet and they used to be the tough ones lol.
