  • Heating still is nt on....until tonight I can imagine, when Im at work and OH s feeling the cold- the phrase 'put a jumper on' does nt seem to register in his head!
    Mummy to 2 gorgeous boys
Edward 4 on xmas day and baby Benjamin born 28/12/09 weighing a whopping 9lb14oz!!
  • We never put the heating on till November, in our house its an extra jumper and snuggle up with husband and dog on the settee. We've still got the windows open and summer duvet etc on, dog still enjoying having back ddor open so he can wander in and out. Fortunately neither husband or I feel the cold.
  • I'm a northerner and was used to the cold until I moved down south three years ago. I've just moved back north in July so am presently getting used to being a little more chilly than usual!
I've had the heating on a couple of times to dry my washing (it never seems to stop raining!) but we have an old system where the radiators come on warm when the water is on so I've not had to think about the heating yet.
When I do put it on properly, it'll be for a few hours in the morning to warm the house for us to wake up to, then a few hours prior to bedtime when people are showering/bathing etc. If I get super chilly during the daytime then I might pop it on for an hour or so but if it's just me in the house, then I'll wrap myself in a duvet on the sofa while I'm working :rotfl:
  • I live in a new flat built in 2007. I moved in in August last year & only had heating on for a week or so in that cold snap in March this year. Even now I have windows open in two rooms to get a through draft 24 hours a day. The insulation regs must be so good that any heat generated, PC. TV, Sky box, dishwasher, washer/drier, etc, is retained within my property. I put the dish washer & washing machine on the timer so that they finish about the time I get up so that the heat generated heats up the flat for the morning. In the winter the temperature is usually around 18-20C first thing in the morning, but soon warms up to around 20-22C.
  • No heating on yet - holding out for as long as possible. I have my system to come on for an hour in the morning and an hour at night to heat my water up, but thats it. Have put my winter duvet on, and am wearing jumpers. Thick socks are great too - as long as you keep your feet warm, the rest of you should be ok.
I do have a small electric fire, which If its really cold, I put on for half an hour, but thats it.
I live in an end cottage thats really old, so it does get really cold, but with the price hikes, just have to stick with it! I find it cheaper to put more clothes on or snuggle up in bed with TV/DVD or a good book! Trying to hold out till November........

Does not putting your heating on not cause condensation problems?
A few years ago I only put my heating on for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening all winter and got really bad condensation on windows, wooden window sills & surrounds and walls - in the corners behind a bookcase was the worst, it was really black and I tried everything to clean it off but there were still stains (until I decorated this summer and covered it with Polycell base coat complete). Since then I have kept the heating on continual from about Nov - Feb/Mar and adjusting it with the radiator valves - I barely have them above 2 and that's in central Scotland which can be as much as 10 deg colder than the south of England.
I think it may be a false economy because to repair problems with damp could be a lot more costly than turning the heating on when it's needed. Anyway, I'd rather be warm and save money elsewhere if I need to.

Hi aj, I don't have condensation problems (not yet anyway!). I live in a 2nd floor flat of a lowrise building (3 years old) and tend to open all the windows each morning to let the air through, closing only the bedroom windows before leaving for work and leaving all internal doors open. Hopefully that helps, but I'm just guessing.

Had the candles on again last night whilst I did some reading. I'll have to make this a regular. It was lovely, but I'll need to get a reading lamp rather than have the overhead lights on as well, I'm thinking.

  • I'm also trying to hold out till November before putting the heating on - the boiler is so old I don't know if it will cope with the Winter and can't afford a new one. British Gas quoted around £3,000!! I put it on for an hour or so in the mornings to heat the water and am just using the gas fire in the lounge for 2-3 hours in the evenings. Layering is the key rather than one thick wooly jumper - 3 or even 4 layers of ordinary clothing really works.

I've had to give in and put the electric blanket on before going to bed though - it's either that or wear a hat as well as socks! If Marilyn Monroe had lived in this country she certainly would have gone to bed in more than Chanel Number 5!

I got the spare duvet out last night and sat under it all evening while watching tv. I refuse to put the heating on yet, it's just too early. I too have a cost-unaware husband who will happily turn things on randomly and leave them (heating, tumble dryer) so I have to lean hard the other way to make things balance out. Duvet will stay there for the winter now, just rolled up and shoved behind the sofa for the warmer days.
  • I don't know what's wrong with all you people. It may be wet but it really isn't that cold. Still have summer duvet on and window open. Although my attitude may have something to do with having grown up without ch in a house where you got ice on the inside of the windows!

    Toughen up!

 Yay for you Gilly if you don't feel the cold yet in your part of the world, but I have to say it's not very friendly to tell people there's something wrong with them cos they feel the cold when you don't. :p

Maybe it's colder or more draughty where they are?

Maybe they're just more sensitive to temperature changes due to a myriad of reasons?

How long will it be after you feel uncomfortably cold even with several layers of clothing on that you put some heating on - not very long I bet! :D

There are people talking about braving chillblains again on this thread - we do not need telling to "Toughen up" my lovely! :D

    Love Jacks xxx :D
