Having said at the start of this thread that I thought we'd have the heating on soon, it seemed to get a bit warmer so we still haven't got it on properly yet - but the electric fires & electric blanket have been on a couple of times to take the edge off. It's frustrating on days like today - the back of the house is southfacing, so if the sun shines even a bit in the afternoon it really warms up, but we seem to have had so many overcast days this month. The day for the big switch on is getting closer though ....
  • Oooooh it's nippy here today. I was tempted but I slapped myself across the face to prevent myself. lol

  • my electric costs me £57pmonth and that is a small one bed flat, with basic elec only - no tumble dryers no heating on etc nothing left on standby. my current capped deal ends next month and they told me to expect to pay about £20 a month more on a new capped deal so £77 before i even consider heating! i darent put it on at all!!!   £77 might not sound like a lot to some peopleith bigger houses but i am now paying it out of DSS money! even worse!!!

That sounds way over the top for a one-bed flat if it doesn't include heating. Are you paying off arrears at all? Have you checked your meter readings? I think you need to do some investigation to find out if you really are using all this electricity - it doesn't sound right at all. You could try asking your supplier if they offer any kind of a service to check your meter etc.
  • im on economy 7. i did have arrears at one point but the past year i have been submitting regular meter readings so am on top of it now but when they recalcualte the bills it still coes out as £57p month. they said that because electricity prices have gone up since i last capped that is why the new capped deal (scottish power fix for free) works out a further £20 per month.

  • i have had mine on eer yes, but in my defence only to dry clothes as out clothes line collapsed and OH hasn't fixed it for me yet! But other than that lol, im pretty happy to do without a fair bit longer, ive no problem wearing layers :)

Definitely ask if someone can come out and check your meter. We were on a tariff like that, but the clock on our meter was wrong, so it was charging daytime rates at nighttime etc. We got the meter changed and got the supplier to reduce the bill because it was their fault they hadn't maintained the meter.
  • oh scary - i know their meter reader has been out to read it himself in the past but havent had anyone other than him ou t- i may well do that then thanks for the tip!

Good god, thats inflation!! I lived in a one bed flat from 1997 to 2001 - it used to cost me £30 per month (prepayment meter) at most through the winter. All that was running was the hot water tank for bath water (only on when needed), the small hot water tank over the kitchen sink (only on when needed) the fridge, the cooker and one electric heater. Oh and the TV.
  • Haven't had heating on since we moved in. (June) only to check its working!

Am holding out to October. Have shut the bedroom windows, as I do like the fresh air during the night, but its a bit nippy in the morning!
