Definitely ask if someone can come out and check your meter. We were on a tariff like that, but the clock on our meter was wrong, so it was charging daytime rates at nighttime etc. We got the meter changed and got the supplier to reduce the bill because it was their fault they hadn't maintained the meter.
We had the same problem.... I sat up all night one night waiting for it to switch to the night rate and it never did..... turned out it'd been like that since we moved in. Got a new meter fitted, they ran it for as month to see what our 'normal' usage would be, and we got a rebate of £450! Am holding out to October. Have shut the bedroom windows, as I do like the fresh air during the night, but its a bit nippy in the morning!
I'd love automatic windows that shut about 2am!0 -
Does not putting your heating on not cause condensation problems?
A few years ago I only put my heating on for an hour in the morning and a few hours in the evening all winter and got really bad condensation on windows, wooden window sills & surrounds and walls - in the corners behind a bookcase was the worst, it was really black and I tried everything to clean it off but there were still stains (until I decorated this summer and covered it with Polycell base coat complete). Since then I have kept the heating on continual from about Nov - Feb/Mar and adjusting it with the radiator valves - I barely have them above 2 and that's in central Scotland which can be as much as 10 deg colder than the south of England.
I think it may be a false economy because to repair problems with damp could be a lot more costly than turning the heating on when it's needed. Anyway, I'd rather be warm and save money elsewhere if I need to.0 -

Me too, you could be onto a business proposition there..........try Dragons Den!!!
I am refusing to put my heating on for as long as possible, when do you think my friends will notice that I have practically moved in with them???:o0 -
If I am feeling uncomfortable, then I do pop it on for an hour. Hate feeling cold - though am getting out of the habit of leaving it on for longer than I need it, after the latest fuel increase...A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition~ William Arthur Ward ~0

My friends have just got a wood burning stove, i think it would be rude not to go around and bask in thier heat...
I have not turned it on yet, not even the fire, i have 4 large candles instead..and it warms the room up nicely.Blackadder: Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?
Still lurking around with a hope of some salvation:cool:0 -
I'm amazed at how many already have the heating on. I'm still sitting around in a T shirt and don't intend to have the heating on until November, which is when I go on holiday. I don't get back until mid-December and will probably have to put it on then but only if the gas fire doesn't do the full job :cool:0

I've had the heating on twice for a couple of hours each time during the day in some cold spells... but we're lucky in that we have an open fire for the evening and we burn wood from the garden.
Way back when... (a couple of years back) I signed up to price capping with British Gas and this continues until 2011 (I think) so we are not going to get massive bills until then.
If we don't light the fire we have some Ikea travel rugs (they were really cheap and they wash quite well) and a couple of furry throws that came free with a leather suite we bought two years ago from Halo ... so we can hold out for longer - I hope!
I retired in July and have been thinking that I no longer get free heating from work during the day... so I might start going to the library more often and perhaps wander around the shops more often too... as long as I can keep my wallet in my handbag! :j0 -
No way is my heating going on until Nov.1st and then only if I can't stand the cold.I've got fleecy throws and I'm using OH as a huge hot water bottle whilst sitting of an evening.I'm from the generation where we grew up with just a coal fire in the living room and no other heating elsewhere in the house so it's just like going back to my childhood and I'm getting used to it again.
OH is being a bit awkward and moaning a little but he knows he's a dead man if he goes for the on switch.
At this rate the power companies are going to lose money as nobody I know is putting on anything they don't have to.Perhaps these increases in energy prices are just a ploy to make us cut down our carbon footprint,it's certainly working.0
