Anyone interested can read about the FP saga here.

I hadn't picked up on it before, but the following extract from the above link seems to provide the likeliest explanation I have so far heard :
"during my conversation, what emerged was the fact that if the security team detected what they considered to be unusual or suspect activity anywhere in the bank's activity, the limit for FP transactions could be temporarily reduced."

In other words, the current FPS cap has nothing whatsoever to do with activity on your particular account (suspect activity or transaction amount) but on what the overall system is encountering.
That being so, the cap will indeed be variable at all times ...

The up and down of it is
    excuses.
You could blame security for nearly anything and everything.
If they know what the problem is, why don`t they fix it.
It`s been going on for long enough.

Here`s another thread on the subject:

Thanks. I didn't notice that second bit myself at the time, however - that 'submit' followed by 'cancel pending' clears the blockage. I'll try this tomorrow

    Don't get me wrong ...
I agree the position is unforgivable.
I was simply trying to work out what is happening.
I suspect the problem is that the staff who apparently put those rather strange procedures into the coding are no longer available, and the current staff are loathe to tinker with them - in case they make things worse (if that is possible). In other words, senior staff do know what the problem is, but can't fix it (at least not easily or safely). It seems they have decided simply to scrap that system in favour of the Lloyds one.

    Let`s hope you`re right.

I struggled to send £5000 from Halifax to Nationwide this week. I managed to send 14 payments of mostly £150 and 2 for £100. I couldn't send the rest and it will leave my account tomorrow. It was also very very slow for about half an hour but then got a bit quicker.

I am thinking of transferring to Nationwide permanently, I will have to search for their limits and performance.

The Halifax limit is £2500 per account per day I thought.

I have not found Nationwide to be any better.

    Lloyds is good.

I couldn't send £2000 by FP on three separate occasions, since I switched to First Direct no problems at all. Halifax is very flakey on FP.

They should tell new customers about the £2500 restriction.

Mmm, I have never managed to send £2500 in one go either. I find £1000 usually works if I persevere.
