You guess correctly, and nor would I sit in on such a forum. Its name immediately tells me that such a forum would not be an open exchange of ideas that welcomes different views, but rather the meeting already has an agenda and a consensus that drugs are bad: the word misuse implies this.

On a purely semantic point, I have never understood why people refer to drug misuse and not drug use. A drug, by its very nature, is designed to be used in some way (drug being defined as a substance that has some kind of effect on the body), so by taking a drug you're doing what you're meant to do with it...only by doing something other than taking it would you be misusing it - otherwise you're using it as intended!

No actually its where the drink & drug abuse of individuals is discussed & the best package of care in order to help them is agreed.

There goes that word again...an immediate presumption that the activity described is undesirable

Yeah, I guess its something silly like the accompanying criminal record, the custodial sentences, the kids in care, the medical problems, collapsed veins, Hep, ect, silly little matters that its presumptuous to call them undesirable...........

    Here goes.

If drugs were legal, the taker wouldn't have a criminal record for possessing them

If drugs were affordable, the taker wouldn't have a criminal record for theft to feed their addiction.

If drugs weren't illegal, there wouldn't be a custodial sentence for taking them.

If drugs were affordable, there wouldn't be a custodial sentence for the drug related crime, caused by the high prices charged by unscrupulous dealers

If drugs were legal, the authorities wouldn't immediately place the children into care on the basis that the parent took them (any more than they would someone who enjoys a few glasses of wine per night)

If drugs were affordable, the authorities wouldn't have to put the children of their users into care because they have had to turn to crime to afford them.

If drugs were regulated, there would be fewer medical problems relating to them

If drugs were regulated and proper equipment freely and plentifully available to addicts then there would be fewer problems relating to Hepititis and other blood-carried infections such as HIV

I DO NOT DENY THAT AN ADDICTION OF ANY KIND IS UNHEALTHY. But the problems relating to drugs are exacerbated by them being illegal. Nearly All of the problems you listed in your above post are caused by the illegality of the drugs, rather than the drugs themselves.

I've never taken any drug other than alcohol nor been offered any (apart from cigarettes which I have never wanted). However, I am strongly with Richy. (I also think prostitution ought to be legalised - hopefully with some sort of area control). It's the fact it's illegal which causes most of the problems.

  • Has anyone here read Ben Eltons book High society? It's a very good book and is very good at showing how the world would actually benifit if drugs were legal and taxed accordingly.

It would be monitered for one so easy to get help if you need or want it.
The ammount of money you would get from the TAX would more than cover the costs of hospitals (eg the NHS sytem), the benifits stystem and all education (including Unis) and for there STILL to be money left over from that to help other people. Say the elderly!

As I said I'm not against drugs. I believe we would have less problems with them over all if they were legal. At least then they would not be mucked about with in any way which is how most people who do OD do so.

Hehe I like shameless personaly. "Make poverty history. Cheaper drugs now" - Frank lol.
In all honesty drugs wouldn't be that much cheaper if under control and taxed but more so than they are now that's for sure.
