You're right Genie, drugs are not a good thing and if I could prevent him I would. Any ideas anyone?

Unfortunately it's a difficult position for you to be in. I think anything you say or do would probably be taken the wrong way, even though you do have his best interests at heart.

If he gets some financial support from you it may be best to reduce this with the eventual aim of ending it, or for example buying him the books he needs for college instead of handing over cash which may be misspent.
  • OP I'm sorry for what your son has done. I'm not against most drugs or drinking but doing them while driving is very irresponsible. He should have to pay for what he did. He surely knew that getting in the car could possibly the most stupid thing he could do to the date of it happening.

With regards to the friends situation I don’t think you can do much. He’s 17 not 7. I know for sure that I would only have at most 4 friends if my parents tried doing this. Not very right. I know one of my friends who has done all the drugs under the sun san heroin is actually the most down to earth person I know. He has had to be sanctioned once but was due to something non drug related (he stated he had done drugs etc to them and they pinpointed it as something else) and in fact they gave him drugs in there. Can’t remember what though but something strong to sedate him. He is a hard worker as a builder to earn his money, it doesn’t rule his life at all. He doesn’t have to work as his dad is stinking rich and has a job set up for him as soon as he wants it in the business he runs.
I wouldn’t have had a boyfriend etc above the age of 12 and I wouldn’t be the person I am if I had not met these people that do drugs. All of the are functioning members of society now. As it is drinking related causes cause more deaths a year than those of drugs statiscically. Just because a drug (i.e drinking) is leagal does not mean it is any less dangerous. It just means it's more socially accepted to do (the drug I mean not driving etc while doing it).

To those that say drugs cause mental health problems this is rare. Schizophrenia is only a predisposition in around 4% of the population if I remember rightly (I may be wrong here). Yet I’m sure in saying that not that many people have it (although you can develope conditions without predispositions to be honest). I have a friend with schizophrenia and I know for certain she has never touched drugs such as weed etc. only prescribed drugs. She has many mental health problems to be honest. Oddly enough none of my friends on drugs have mental health problems (I may be in a minority but I know a lot of people who do drugs. Indeed one is in her 60’s and doesn‘t believe that the drugs have actually got stronger at all but that is neither here nor there) . It isn’t yet certain that drugs can cause them anyway it is but a theory as it stands. Indeed those with mental health problems may gravitate towards them due to their problems. No one knows if they are cause or otherwise yet for sure.

He has had to be sanctioned

What is this? Do you mean 'sectioned'?
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

He was put in a padded cell for his own good basically. Alot of things had happened and he couldn't handle the stress and he tried to jump off of a rather tall bridge. He had been off the drugs for months at this point as he didn't want to o them anymore at this point and was doing well otherwise. Go figure  . He didn't go back on them for months after this. As I said though wasn't even drug related.

    How lovely are you!

You are so loyal to your friends and I respect that. I still feel that it is a shame that so many people of all ages feel the need for artificial stimulants - whatever they are, be it drink, drugs or as mentioned before, caffeine.

Your friend, with the 'stinking rich father'. Well that reminds me of something I read years ago. It was Paul McCartney - he said something like, my children will make their own way in the world, I've earnt alot of money and they will have to earn their own (or words to that effect). It seems to have worked. The children all went to state schools, and you don't read anything negative about them and they all seem to be finding their own way and earning their own living.

It makes you feel really good when at the end of the month, you get your wage packet - knowing that you have earnt that. Its called Pride. We should all get high on 'Pride'. And go and spend that wage sensibly - like you read on this site. Find a good bargain, invest some money for your future.

I hope you can direct your firends in that direction - may be set an example.

    Its an idea.

  • Have I missed something here?

Not in this thread, but in other threads, Conor makes really nasty bigoted comments about disabled people, as does Linas, who I notice has now chirped in on this thread.
I've given up trying to get my signature to work with the new rules, if nobody knows what the rules are what hope do we have?
  • Sorry but 12 months ban is not long enough he got into that car fully aware he was as high as a kite and knowing the dangers of him not having full use of his senses due to him taking drugs. He should be banned for at least 5 years so he can learn a lesson the hard way.

The law is an a*s it allows people like your soon to be on the roads after such a short time, not teaching them harsh lessons to at least make them think about it before they drink/drug drive again

Btw this response was nt directed at you or your son only but other drivers alike, and the law!

No doubt the added insurance cost of having to declare this will make the cost of driving prohibitive anyway.

Unfortunately the type of people these laws tend to be applied to don't care about insurance, bans or driving licenses anyway.

    Drugs wreak lives, FACT.

Drug abuse is dealt with in the mental health section under the social & health services, so that should give you a clue as to how the experts think it impacts of peoples mental health.
