My old boss lived in a two bed maisonette which was the smallest place I have ever seen, with his girlfriend, her son aged 6 and two more children aged 3 and 1. They asked the council (Maidstone) for a larger place (even a three bed flat) but all they were told was that there was a huge waiting list. When she fell pregnant again they had to take matters into their own hands and rent privately.
They had a lucky escape. The only 3 bed houses in Maidstone would have been in Mangravet, Tovil, or Park Wood. The council is not the answer to all problems in life, and those children will have better life chances in private rented areas.

,my partner works full time so the children we have we pay for ourselves we dont get handouts from the state

I accept fully your statement of no "handouts from the state". Could you kindly confirm no Child Benefit & no Working/or/Child Tax Credit, in line with your statement???

Best regards & good wishes to all of your family...

You can't blame someone for claiming whatever is due to them under this system. I hate Brown's attempts to make us all grateful recipients of his largess, but wouldn't not claim the various credit's he imposed on us, paid for by my higher tax bill. But I do also know people on benefits who have continued to breed knowing the state would provide a better house than the flat they were in. Blame the system, not those caught up in it.

  • i just wonder how i will benefit from the state. I pay exorbitant tax and cant get any tax credit. I have to earn £100 to buy £60 worth of petrol and people keep saying "make the higher earners pay more" yet we do through the tax system.

And, on that £60 worth of petrol, you pay the same tax as a single benefit claimant.

yes, but what does the claimant earn - err nothing.
HRT have to shed 40% to get the same result.

i am not talking about what tax is paid for the product but the amount of tax paid to net the amount to buy the product.

I realise that, because it suits your argument. But, to put it into your own declared stipulations, the single person earning minimum wage pays the same tax when buying petrol as you do, so don't feel too hard done by. Of course, on minimum wage, he is unlikely to benefit from the many and varied tax exemptions you enjoy, such as those on pension contributions, but I'm sure he will be very grateful.
