You're most welcome. If you want to really bore yourself silly, just have a read through your own local authorities housing policy online. Not only will you have ample information, you will also have found one of the best known cures for insomnia!

Another point is that owners (with or without a mortgage) have to rely on themselves to address their accommodation needs, those in social housing have the option to sort themselves out in private sector or use social housing to improve their home. For example anyone with their own mortgaged home who had 3 children but lived in a crowded 2-bed, would not be offered social housing, whereas a current social housing tenant might.

Anyone can apply for social housing and will be judged upon their needs in the same way, regardless of tenure. Of course, a home owner also has the ability to rent privately if they so wish to do.

:Ai would like to say a big thankyou to everyone for all your comments{good and bad}however i dont think this is the right place for us to get the advice we need so thanks again and goodbye:A

Just in case you do peep back again at this thread Chocs2010, why didn't you post the name of your local council? No one can really give you any constructive advice without that.

Also fill in the form at http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx to see if you are eligible for LHA top-up so that you can get out of your 1-bed flat and into a bigger private rental.

Good luck finding a suitable home for your family :)

Wonder if anyone can give advise just wanting to know if I've been told the correct thing as fed up of fighting people to get whats right.
we are a 2 1/2 house housing !!! (say 1/2 as box room 6 ft x 8 ft) 2 boys 2 girls, boys 16 & 2 have to share, girls 11 and 13 one has box room other sleeps downstairs in 'dinning room' which is 8 x 8 and has sliding doors to outside. I am disabled, and can't have some items fitted in the house as too small and also due to new build (9 yr ago) walls aren't sturdy enough. there is damp in two rooms upstairs. nowhere for a table as daughter in back room. house is for upto 5 (6 of us) people on rent agreement, but have been told (as now in this area all applicants to HA or council are on the same list) that we are not and only applicable for a 3 bed, were put in the lowest banding and now found out we can't even apply for a bigger more suitable 3 bed. I'm really fed up of this, struggle with things as I do but my dreppresion is getting worse and not helping with my rehab either as we are all on top of each other constantly and really think theres gonna be a murder soon can't keep on like we are at each other. Best is that applied 3 year ago in nov, was told if we moved to another area could have larger no prob, but couldn't due to work etc, then this year found out they never let us know about the new scheme due to admin error so we've been struggling thinking we were on a list but things had changed and we weren't.
I've been told from shelter we are not over crowded (even though 3 year ago when it was a form applying to HA we were and on they're site it says we are) what are the rules also mainly because of my disabliltiy. received a extra form from the new place to apply putalsorts on and they never questioned anything, could've put had no legs, arms and no query which I don't thinks right really to me someonein the office isn't dealing correctly with applications

The girls could have bunk beds and share, freeing up an extra room downstairs for family space. The 16 year old will be able to support himself in a couple of years, and see above discussion for the advisability of bringing a baby into such a crowded situation. We would love to have another child, but can't afford it so we don't.

Damp in a modern house is likely to be cause by lifestyle rather than construction. Get some professional advice or use Google.

The room isn't big enough for bunkbeds it is not even classed as a room under shelter - less than 50 square feet. The 16 year old is in further education, with 2 year old we were told that we could have a larger house tomorrow as they put it as long as we moved to another area (unsuitable due to WORK so not as if things couldn't be afforded either) but then another process came into place. I was mainly concerned re the disability not bothered re more bedrooms but a bigger or better laid out property as house as very small and I struggle with getting around it and this isn't something that could've been prevented I haven't always been disabled.
Re the damp the HA won't help (would like looking into as only started 1 year ago and been here for 9) the property has other misrepairs too that they will not do took 6 months to sort out the shower and still not right lol

Many councils/HA's require medical confirmation/letters re disability, but then add extra points for transfer/bidding.

These guys offer a free service to disabled people, and may be able to give you advice on what your council/HA obligations are, and how to proceed with obtaining a transfer:

    Or, Shelter give good advice:
