  • Many thanks to all for their posts. Sorry it took me a while to reply.

Off to see a dietician at the hospital tomorrow so that may be useful.

HI d&dd, I was thinking about a bread maker too as I am also coeliac,
can you tell me how the prescription works, ie how many mixes you can have on each prescription as I have never done this before, thank you

This is a great article which tells you how it works and how many units you are allowed per month.:D

I usually get 3 x harvest mixes,2 bags of Dr Schar and I can make this last for approx 4 weeks..I use all of these for his bread or rolls.I can have more but I top up with Doves Farm for his cakey bits.
When you see the Dietician make sure you ask for the free sample cards!!!
I got a welcome pack from
    Juvela
    Glutafin
Welcome foods and they were all really generous :T

When I first started getting his stuff we trialled many products *courtesy of the freebies* and the mixes I get now are the ones he will eat :D
You must sample as many as you can find as there are worlds of difference between them  Some are too foul to even swallow!!!

The bread for us was the hardest thing to replace...he doesn't eat Pasta,Pizza or crispbreads etc (he has very weird taste in food...)his diet is mainly made up of cereal, bread, chicken and cakes..plus humungeous amounts of Strawberries :rotfl:

Most things now are available in free from or gluten free versions but you have to dust off your reading glasses until you get used to it all as many products can still be dodgy depending on how severe a reaction you have to trace amounts..

My son develops a glowing red ear and he also has DH (dermatitus herpeteformus) and his skin always breaks down if he has any infringements.
His diet is more strict than the coeliac one as the Codex thingy still allows some things for coeliacs which he reacts to..

Marmalade Season 2008 can be officially opened! Bought 2.5 Kilos of Seville oranges this morning (£1.08 per kilo - same price as last year).

First batch has been finished and the second batch of oranges is simmering away in the pressure cooker as I type. The smell of orange around the house is wonderful.

I made a slightly larger 1st batch than normal (1.5 kg fruit, 3 kg sugar) and had a slight heart in mouth moment when it started to boil - but the pot was (just) big enough.

Happy marmalade making in 2008 to you all!

Now that it is January, my mind has turned to the prospect of making marmalade from Seville oranges.

Last year I made 3 "different" varieties, one plain, one with brandy and one with cider.

I was wondering if anyone out there had any good failsafe methods, as last year my setting point test was a little hit and miss, although all taste good (still have a couple of jars left, LOL!)

I found these instructions on the web, and they took 2 days .... would you try that?

Getting excited now (how sad am I!):j

    Would I make it?
Having watched that, I am certainly going to make it. And I love your idea of putting some brandy in. At what point did you add the brandy?

Marmalade time agian  We haven't finished last year's lot yet. I must try not to make such large batches this time. I found Delia's marmalade recipe to be pretty reliable. Last year, though I made jelly with the Seville oranges (to save cutting up all that peel).

Simply cover chopped fruit in water, simmer till soft. Strain overnight through a jelly bag. Measure juice and add a lb of sugar for every pint of juice. Boil and test for setting. Pot.
