I loved Life on Mars - brilliant storyline/plotting, great cast, just like the Sweeney but with a bit of PC to make it palatable to today's generation. It was "our time" - it was funny to see him struggling with the lack of technical goodies we take for granted these days. But they waited to the last episode to play the eponymous song, didn't they, but it was very moving when they finally played it. Now I see why they didn't use it for the theme song. I liked the ending, can't wait for the next series. We usually do a pub quiz on Mondays but I haven't been for the last few weeks because I watched this.

It was SOOOOOO accurate, with everyone smoking and drinking all the time, the clothes (all blokes wore those Burtons 3 piece suits with hideous shirt and tie sets), the obvious sexism in the workplace and the fact that females had to put up with it - where I worked in 1973 we had an office groper, he was vile, but we could do nothing about it as he was the manager!!!!! Today he would be sacked, if not prosecuted.

Fran - sorry to hear about your accident, hope you are OK.

I had 2 "at fault" bumps in 3 months a couple of years ago (after 25+ years of clean driveing) - fortunately I had protected NCD and the only effect it had was that I lost my protection for 2 years - should get that back this time so long as I can keep out of trouble. It kept me tied to my current insurer but I have to say they were good when I needed them.

  • I haven't seen Life on Mars and until I checked thought you were talking about the 1950's. From what I remember of the '70s in London loads of people had home phones; many women were managers - I was one of them; office gropers were a rare and dying breed mostly because women had found ways to put a stop to their behaviour (a platform sole scraped down a shin followed by a very loud apology usually did the trick); and we were all wearing trouser suits with flares to the office with kipper ties for the blokes. Lots of holidays in Spain and shock horror - women buying their own cars and houses.
I guess you had to be there :j
Having said all that - I remember nothing whatsoever about the '60s :D

And to add to Mr T's list: hemlines up, hemlines down, corsets off, rollons on - and quickly off, torn up newspaper squares in the outside lav, nowt to do on Sundays, and of course - loads of soda, bicarb and vinegar for softening the water, curing indigestion and putting on chips.

    I've been inside a Tardis :j !!!

I was stopped on the streets of Edinburgh, with a friend, around 1971 at the age of 16, and invited by the nice officers to step inside a pukka police box as we had dangerously long hair and greatcoats.

I swear it really was bigger on the inside, though not so big as the Doctor's.

Once inside we played a game which involved us taking everything out of our pockets and placing them on the table for the officers' inspection.

I had a condom (unused of course) which I had wrapped in a "pass the parcel" style in about 20 layers of tin foil, such that it was about the size of a cricket ball. I have no idea why - perhaps it was a slow day.

I was desparately trying not to wet myself laughing as they peeled layer after layer off. The look on their faces as each layer came off - they just knew they were onto something big :rotfl:

Anyway, they were none too happy when they finally came upon the prize and accused us of being in Edinburgh with the express intention of seducing every 14yo girl in the city. Chance would be a fine thing - it would be at least another 4 years until I could even talk to a female of the species!

Apologies for going a tad off topic, but I just had to brag a little :T .

A young man came round the other day doing market research but I couldn't do it because I was older than the top age (45). He said he didn't believe me as I looked far younger than his mum and she was in her 30s. Bless.
Anyway 50 is the new 30, it's official.

I guess at Saga they believe that at 50 you shouldn't working, just taking holidays and go on Saga cruises!

No discount for being over 50 but they will provide 3 in 1 oil for the joints, space in the boot for the zimmer and a free phone call to the hospital for some ambulance men to get you off the bus.....

Thanks for that. I needed a real belly-laugh!!! (And believe me, there was some REAL wobbling going on!)

Is there some way of splitting your journey between train & coach, looking for special deals on both? (Time consuming looking but it might be worth it.)

Check out MegaBus and MegaTrain. Brilliant prices if you go to/from/via London. Lots of journies for £1 plus 50p booking fee. Open to all ages, not just us Frisky Fifties. Try searching on this site - I know they've been mentioned in a thread somewhere.
