I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago. I've been finding it difficult believing that I've got there. I swear that there is some mistake on my birth certificate. My 26 year old daugther made my day though with a card that said I only measure 10 in celsius and then she asked how many other 50 year olds have a four year old daughter as well as one of 26. Ahhh there's nothing like being a mum again at 45 to keep you young at heart. Mind you I now qualify for entry to our local community day centres lunchtime club. Trouble is they don't seem to have a creche!!!!0

I was 50 in Sept 05 - my house buildings and contents insurance was due same month and it was less even though I made 2 claims in the same year.
OH was 50 in Oct 05 - he renewed his car ins in Jan and last year it was £900 this year it was £450 - WOW!!!!! Same car (Sports car), same cover, we shopped around last year as well as this year - new company is Esure, they seem good for over 50's, even on an evil monster like that!!. I'll try them myself when mine falls due in May.

Thanks Stella, I'll bear the 50 bit in mind when I renew mine this year! So how long does this concession last before they then decide you're too senile to drive anyway?! :eek:Torgwen..........

Hi Fran - well, I'm waiting for that one.
Worst of being "over 50" is that I keep getting things in the post like invitations to join the "over 50 plan" guaranteeing me acceptance for life assurance cover with no medical and also those funeral plan things - talk about depressing! I hope I have a long wayto go before I'm ready for all that.0 -
A couple of points from moi. I've told my children to give me the cheapest funeral possible. I've never understood why anyone wants a fancy funeral and all the expense that goes with it. Put me on the compost heap if you want. I'm dead, you can cut me up in bits as the pathologists do and it won't hurt me.
My car insurance this year was the cheapest it has been for years. I actually thought they had made a mistake quoting me 176 quid for fully comp, protected no claims and all that but no because I checked. This is with Churchill and I did have a claim this year but it wasn't my fault and they were very good, (Disclaimer, I have nothing to do with this company and certainly can't afford shares in anything). I was with Saga once but they were expensive compared to a lot of others. They also bombard you with junk mail trying to flog you insurance (only if you are fit), funeral plans, holidays with geriatrics (sp?). This continues once you have left them and probably until you pop your clogs. I don't think they have discovered how to get mail delivered into the after life yet but they are working on it.
Like the rest, I am still 20 something in my mind but helping one of my sons move the other day proved that in fact I am knackered. Where did the years go? Tell you what though, we didn't half see some changes in life didn't we? Tele, colour tele, Berlin wall going up, Berlin wall coming down, man in space, man on moon (allegedly!). Outside toilets (in my case anyway), snow that actually exceeded the two inch "blizzards" we get these days. Sorry going on a bit and it isn't really the correct media to do so but can't help myself. It's a generation thing and at least most of us can spell.
Arrrgh, I forgot something. Age Concern are like Saga. Make an enquiry and they bombard you with corporate stuff. They certainly ain't concerned about age, only making money. That is my opinion only but I stand by it.Don't buy the Sun.0 -
Well so much for cheap insurance...... I shouldn't have posted last night as this morning I was involved in a collision at the station car park.
Hopefully the insurers will take it as a 50/50, but that still means me fixing the damage to my car or leaving it as worth less for a part exchange in the future. (So who said the over 50's are safer drivers?! :rotfl: )

Fran wrote:I don't know if you saw it but "Life on Mars" which has been on tele on Monday nights (now finished till next year but I'm sure they'll show it again) was brilliant to watch for all the old things such as how people used to dress, having to go to the public phone box (I mean who had home phones let alone mobiles?! :rotfl: ). Other details such as how they treated each other at work etc. were fascinating.
Never missed it Fran as it was "Our time". Didn't think much of the ending though but at least it leaves it open for the next series. Of course the star was a scouser so what do you expect? :rotfl:Don't buy the Sun.0
