Can't even get cheap travel on National Express now

Can I still buy an Advantage50 coachcard?

Following a review of our range of discount coachcards, the Advantage50 Coachcard was withdrawn from sale on 1 October 2004.

Since its introduction fourteen years ago we have seen a very limited take up of the Advantage50 card. The majority of our existing card holders now qualify for savings of up to 50% with our routesixty fares and so the decision was taken to withdraw the Advantage50 card from sale.

If you already hold an Advantage50 coachcard, we will continue to honour your card with discounts until it expires.

I've just tried a hyperthetical journey on National Express website and there is still the option of ticking Advantage 50 card. That was the only way I could find any info about it though! Where did you find that info? It looks like from what you say that they have stopped it then and are concentrating on attracting students.

It was on the National Express website, I could not see anything about Advantage 50 so I did a search and that's what came up.

Wish I was 50 again ... then my dear Mum would be with me for another 8 years and I wouldn't care if I had to pay full price for anything ever again .........

I just checked out a National Express coach trip from Glasgow to Plymouth - a 12 hour trip ..

No discount for being over 50 but they will provide 3 in 1 oil for the joints, space in the boot for the zimmer and a free phone call to the hospital for some ambulance men to get you off the bus.....

Those long National Express coach trips are a nightmare, I haven't done one for a number of years because of the last one I did. Train fares are now set to go up too so that's getting less of an option.

Is there some way of splitting your journey between train & coach, looking for special deals on both? (Time consuming looking but it might be worth it.)

  • Try Saga for car insurance
  • Saga worked out twice as expensive for me and my husband (both new 50 year olds) for car insurance quoting £400+ rather than the £236 quoted by Churchill. So try the others first.

I have found RIAS who do house insurance for over 50's - mine has just dropped to £165 buildings and contents with accidental damage! - cover up to £300 000. Not bad eh.

You need to be careful with these people, when I enquired they wanted all windows to have a lock and all the locks to be locked every time we went out!

I live directly opposite a police station!

This is not advice - hopefully it's common sense..
