As Britain's worst mass murderer in recent years was Harold Shipman, is it acceptable to ban all doctors from hotels?
Men make up about 90% of our armed forces, so I would say that this is indirect discrimination against males - which IS unlawful. What would happen if they had some policy against nurses or primary school teachers staying (say, due to a bad experience in the past)? I should imagine all our most prominent feminists would leap to their defence. It's funny how this sort of thing only ever seems to happen to servicemen, not servicewomen - are male soldiers seen as more of a threat than female ones?
At Last,
Someone here finally grasping the notion.
Thankyou. And you make the point well.These ignorants would not see the shallowness of their pathetic logic0 -
If Harold Shipman (and some of his medical associates) went round smashing up hotels, fighting each other and generally behaving antisocially after downing 20 pints of lager, then yes, there would be a perfectly reasonable basis for the proprietors of hotels to choose whether or not to allow doctors to stay. But doctors don't do that, do they?As Britain's worst mass murderer in recent years was Harold Shipman, is it acceptable to ban all doctors from hotels?
You're also failing to distinguish between a one-off (Shipman) and a pattern of behaviour which is repeated week after week in towns in close proximity to army barracks. If there had only been one incident in the past, say, 10 years involving squaddies, then it would be equally stupid to have a "no squaddies" policy as it would be to have a "no doctors" or "no teachers" policy. But that's not true of the real world so it's not a very good analogy, is it?0 -

<devils advocate> Only if a significant number of doctors took to murdering other residents of the hotels they were staying in.</advocate>
No, it's someone else setting up straw men.moore wrote:Someone here finally grasping the notion.

Conjugating the verb 'to be":

No, it's someone else setting up straw men.
I suggest you read up on logical fallacies.
The ability to identify logical fallacies in the arguments of others, and to avoid them in one’s own arguments, is both valuable and increasingly rare. Fallacious reasoning keeps us from knowing the truth, and the inability to think critically makes us vulnerable to manipulation by those skilled in the art of rhetoric.
I suggest you look up Janusian thinking.
The amount of soldiers who cause trouble is a tiny percentage.
We are talking about discrimination here arent we? or am I just a really thick ex squaddie who should just go down the pub get !!!!ed and smash it up to fulfill your riduculous stereotype casting.0 -
This area of Surrey has quite a few barrack towns. I suspect the hotel being in the general budget range of most travellers has had its fair share of squaddie problems.The man without a signature.0

Kipling says it well, and hes brighter than both of us!
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool,you bet that Tommy sees!0 -
