There's a Holiday Inn just 2 minutes walk round the corner.

but he wouldnt have known that (if he was just visiting).

I could understand them not wanting a group of soldiers because they can be quite loud, as can any group be it all male or all female but a fella on his own they are taking the pish

    Pure sensationalism.

The hotel owner can do what he wants.

And if the soldier had a car, he could drive to another hotel.

    Total non-story.

Just to add to my previous post my most recent experience of squaddies was at a friends party at Christmas. Her brother (squaddie) and his mate (squaddie) beat a friend of mine unconscious because "he was being cheeky". We had to call an ambulance. They got a £300 fine each. I hope the army dealt with them in a more serious way than the courts did.

Slightly going off the point but in general the British Army has served the population very well. It is a shame really that the recent campaigns have tarnsihed such a good name - and usually for no fault of the serving members. But clearly the examples of Abu Ghraib, Bagram Airbase, and rendition flights show that brutalising has taken place and probably been systematic - maybe under the command of foreign powers. Many of the NCO's would simply have followed orders and it takes real bravery to defy such orders.

Mmm, Do you really think british soldiers never defy orders or simply just ignore them. Maybe you think people join the forces because they cant do anything else. Heard of Kosovo? when General Mike Jackson was ordered by Clinton all be it indirectly to take the airport before the Russians got to it he refused saying he would not be responsible for starting a world war.(fairly brave and I would say taking a stand) Jackson was snubbed after the war, not that he cared. I have seen plenty of bravery shown by young soldiers NCOs and commisioned where they have acted on there own to save life putting there own at risk. I suspect that you are an armchair idealist who could change the way the world works from your front room, real life isnt quite that simple. Enjoy your freedom!

    IMHO I'm with the OP.

Our armed forces don't get enough credit (or pay!) for the hard work the majority do. And to be "barred" from somewhere just because you serve in the military, smacks to me of some form of nationalism gone wrong!

Most people can quote an incident where they've seen unruly military folk (I can, but then I served for 7 years!), but a lot more can quote when they've seen unruly civilian workers at some stage!

I'm affronted on his behalf, however, agree the story is sensationalised quite dramatically!

Rubbish. The holiday inn is one of the tallest buildings in Woking. Plus there's no way you could miss the garish neon lighting.

We have a huge army camp just down the road in Aldershot. Squaddies sometimes come into Woking to "let off steam". It's not pleasant to be around when that happens. Mind you, it's generally not pleasant to be around Woking town centre on any night, but if a group of squaddies are in town you can pretty much guarantee mindless violence. I'm not surprised the hotel owner doesn't want soldiers in his place.

To correct the story, he was actually visiting a wounded colleague.

Anyway, I would prefer not to stay in hotels patronised by people who have undergone a degree of brutalisation as part of their training. I am sure I am not the only person who dislikes the way in which soldiers frequently behave, and so there are sound business reasons for the hotel's policy. Anyway, it is private property and so they can accept or refuse whoever they choose.

No they can not refuse for whatever they want.

" im not letting you in because your black" Im not letting you in because your jewish" "Im not letting you in because your gay"

Thats ok is it because that is exactly what has happened here. Dont loose sight of the core principle that is being discussed here!
  • They refused to let a black, gay, jewish Solder into the hotel??!?

Does hyperbole know no limits?

    Edit: Forgot '[STRIKE]injured[/STRIKE] mortally wounded'
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
