Yes you are both right, I do apologize, living solo does make things easier.0

True, ... and if ebico put their prices up by 100% they'd be even less competitive.
I guess what I'm saying is why have you chosen 25%?
Of all the big 6 players, none has put their electricity prices up by as much as 25% recently. e.g. SP recently incresed theirs by just 9.4%
snip..
Npower's recent electricity price rises have been way above 25% on some tariffs (their headline figure was 14%).
Example: their SOL12 tariff: depending on the annual units used, here are the percentage increases:
4000 – 32% higher
5000 – 46% higher
6000 – 56% higher
7000 – 64% higher
8000 – 71% higher

The message is that, for any supplier and specific tariff, don't take for granted that a price increase will be in line with the stated headline figures, as some people will discover over the next few weeks their actual increases may be much greater.0 -

It is not as simple as saying SP increased theirs by just 9.4%. The price increase varies by area.
I was on a standing charge online tariff and this went up by 22.5%.
For example pre increase price was 12.88p daily charge 8.806p unit
now 12.88p daily charge 10.827p unit0 -

Agreed, it is different looking at specific examples especially for electricity as not only prices vary by tariff, but also by area.
However, remember however that were there is a change of more than the average then there must be a change elsewhere less than that average."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
All prices I quoted were indeed averages, usually taken from here:

That's a good point, and indeed in the case of npower on SOL12 electric their recent price change has meant that the annual bill has halved for users of 900 units or less (in East Anglia that is!).
It all depends on how the electricity companies work out their average figures to present to the public when they have to make the unpleasant announcement of a price increase.
The problem comes when people look at the headline figure announced by their company and assume that their own individual increase will be within a few percent of what's been announced, rather than the massive increases experienced by some.0 -
Quote from Kirsty @ ebico 08/09/08
We are a not-for-profit energy company, but due to wholesale gas and electricity prices (a graph showing these increase can be seen my clicking here) we unfortunately will have to increase out prices. We will still remain competitive and the fairest tariffs on the market.
Quote From Kirsty @ ebico 05/09/08
We will be having a price increase in the near future our managers in discussions about the rise at the moment. We will still be competitively low.
This confirms that I will need to switch at least electricity as Scottish Power is already cheaper than ebico currently, nevermind when ebico increases its prices !! . We shall have to see about the gas too.
