Npower prices rises are significantly more than published for some customers

Options
Following the announcement of Npower increasing Gas (26%) and Electric (14%)

After checking a few comparison sites for the updated tariff rates, I was shocked at the increase.

Based on gas consumption of 11560Kwh and electric 4134Kwh, using the new tariff charges and discounts resulted in a 37% increase for gas:eek: and 33% increase for electricity:eek: , which gives me a combined increase of 36% on my previous tariff charges.

Can you imagine the outcry if Npower released the increases I found?

Npowers Terms and conditions state

We may change our prices, discounts or the way we charge for gas and electricity. If we increase our prices or reduce our discounts, we will tell you within 65 Working Days. If you do not accept the changes, you may end this agreement by changing supplier. The changes will not apply to you if within 10 Working Days of being told about the changes, you tell us that you are ending the agreement, and within the next 15 Working Days we receive notice through industry processes that another supplier will begin to supply your home within a reasonable period of time.

I'm now hoping Npower will drag it's feet issuing the notification of price rises and take advantage of switching supplier via quidco(naturally), making sure I phone/email/send letter by recorded delivery of my intention to change supplier and reject the new prices.

The only problem seems to be which supplier to choose BG Click 5 on the surface appears to be cheapest but hasn't applied recent price rises YET, and EON energy saver online 8 is similar.

  • Hi

Yes I am caught in this one also. Based on new tariff received today my electricity bill is forecast to increase by 84%!!!

At least according to their T&Cs I can avoid this by switching...but where to.

Comparison site throws up ClickEnergy5 being by a long way the cheapest but I read they havent yet increased theirs. Anyone any idea when they are due to as no point swapping only to find out they are worse!

  • Hi David,

I've received my official new tariff for Gas today(typical Npower on the ball when it's in there favour) and surpisingly Npower haven't sent Electric charges yet, I've taken the plunge and switched to BG Click 5 via Quidco and informed Npower of my intention to switch.

When I advised CS about the unacceptable prices rises that I would incur based on my annual consumption, she still had the cheek to tell I was wrong and quoted the increases as 26% and 14%.

If Click 5 increases before the switch is complete, I will reconsider staying with Npower, depending on price differences and providing I can stay on SOL 8 until my annual discounts are applied in December and re-evauate.

However I'd prefer to stay away from Npower due to there terrible track record with seasonal weighting or sculpting, although I was very fortunate to be on SOL8 where charges are applied on daily basis.

  • Hello Flower, I received my price increase letter today as well, it did include the electric.
I was surprised to find that the increase for my usage was 28% gas and 11% electric (SoL 10 east mids).
Did you notice the paragraph and I quote:
"As a sign on line customer, we would like to reassure you that you are still getting a more competitive rate than a standard offline customer. In order to continue enjoying this great deal in the future, please sign up for paperless billing."
Do I take that as a threat that if I do not accept paperless billing then they will transfer me to the standard tariff.
Unfortunately the comparison sites show this to be a competitive tariff, only the ones yet to rise come any where near, and I am now 5 months into next years bonus payment. Do not know whether to leave for the same reasons as you.
  • I am 6 months into my SOL6 discount - but I am going to change supplier. I reckon that transferring to a supplier who uses level sculpting thoughout the year must save me a bomb when compared to nPower who charge all (90%) of the prime units in the winter months. Might change back in the spring though. Does anyone think I have that wrong?
