#Hi Newlywed and all.........your roving reporter can confirm, having sampled this morning :jthe malt loaf at Ravens is superb. :D

I'm jealous :( Do they still have choc donuts? They were lovely with like chocolate custardy sauce in the middle. yum...

As for keeping things quiet - the guy at the bacon and egg stall says he's been really busy lately (had no free range eggs left on Monday). I'm guessing the word is spreading.... ;)

Not going to be for everyone, but the butchers just by the entrance to the open market has half pigs heads for 99p -plenty of old style deliciousness for the non-squeamish. Also local rabbit and pheasant for £3.50ish.

Has no-one mentioned the best 2am bargain in the world? The market diner's gutbuster. Never bettered.

Thanks a lot Tim- I've been wanting to buy rabbit for ages but haven't been able to find any. Got some pig's trotters recently to try them. Glad to have tried them but not sure I would again.

It's mad really, because the local farmers shoot rabbits en masse as vermin and just bin them. Complete waste. Some years ago I found someone who lived next door to a farmer and he would bring rabbits to work and send them to me in the internal mail, nearly scared one of the mailroom girls to death when she looked in the bag and saw a pair of dead eyes staring out.

Though you have to say that rabbit does live right on that jagged edge between pets and the food chain, you do have to be a little careful who you give it to.

Quick recipe for downland rabbit - heat some olive oil (sizzling) in a casserole and brown a quartered rabbit with some lardons (cubes - lidl do these in little packs, they're great) of smoked bacon, some cubed carrots, if possible the liver, heart and kidneys of the rabbit chopped fine and a leek. Turn the heat down, season with salt and pepper, cover with savoy cabbage, probably 1/3 of a cabbage I guess and pour in a glass or so of cider, doesn't really matter what kind and little chopped thyme. Then stick in a medium oven for about an hour, maybe a little more, until the rabbit is tender - check this, it's not great when it's tough - and serve with sauted potatoes and a chilled glass or two of the remainder of the cider - absolute treat on a winter's evening.

Would work great in a remoska (my new favourite toy) I should think.

Anyone happen to know where I can get jerusalem artichokes cheapish locally? Saw them at the Saturday market I think but they were stupidly expensive.

You and me both then:D . Thanks a lot for the recipe. Will look to do this in the next few weeks. Really pleased: haven't had rabbit for a long time. As you say, for a lot of people now, eating rabbit is well of the menu. Never bought J artichokes so can't help you there.
