Tesco's Officially Stopped Coupons????

  • I used £12.00 worth of vouchers today at my local store in Barry, South Wales. Somedays I am lucky but other days the cashier refuses to take them without even trying to scan them. It is the luck of the draw each time !

I am a customer service manager for tesco.
When you have coupons, insist that the cashier scans every one. The till will decide if you can have the discount and not the cashier. All TESCO coupons MUST have a barcode, otherwise they can NOT be accepted.
Please remember though that ANY tesco coupons ALWAYS remain the property of the company, and are used at discretion of the management. If for any reason a manager is not happy accepting a coupon, they have right to refuse.

You may use coupons that are not tesco specific (ie cut out from a magazine or newspaper to use in any company)for items you have not bought - but this is limited to one coupon per transaction and only if that product is stocked by that particular store. If you have not bought a product and the coupon is tesco specific (says can only be used in tesco) then it cannot be used. - Again, management have right to refuse any coupons!

    HOPE PEOPLE FIND THIS HELPFULL

    Thanks for the info.

Can you tell us what the official Head Office policy is for limits on coupon value compared to the total value of your shop? For instance, if you had a coupon for Pampers, value £1, and you had not bought Pampers, would you be able to use that coupon on, say, a £5 transaction?

As customer service manager for Tesco, I can assure you there is no such thing as a "mangled voucher" button.
Vouchers can only be used IF they have a barcode. There is a button for vouchers and savings stamps which don't have barcodes, but these are the only items that can be tendered on there, and cashiers can be heavily repremanded if this is misused.

ALL VOUCHERS ARE AT MANAGEMENT DISCRETION - EVEN TESCO CLUBCARD VOUCHERS. If we don't want to accept one, we don't have to!

Thanks for that Clarification on Coupons, i was informed that Tesco would allow the voucher as long as they stocked the product and that people didn't take the Mick really out of the system, hoever that appears to have changed in my local store.

Tesco at Bursledon don not take any vouchers unless you buy the product. This has been their policy for over a year now. Tesco at Eastleigh and Winchester DO take coupons if you don't buy the products so now I will go there!!! It seems very silly not to have a countrywide policy.

My expereince at ASDA is that they have now stopped taking coupons unless you buy the product AND they have stopped the price matching.

I am a customer service manager for Tesco and agree with you, that the policy should be a nationwide one and not store specific, however, like all profiting businesses this is done for a reason.

Basically each store, tries to "out profit" the next, depending on you location, different stores will have different policies.
Eg. If the nearest supermarket within you town is tesco, and there is not another for about 10 -15 miles, they probably will be reluctant to accept coupons, especially for other stores (such as sainsburys or asda) as they know it is more convenient for you to shop there, and that is at store discretion. However, if you live somewhere, where rival supermarkets are very close, then you will probably find they will be more than happy to accept your coupons.
I must say, before anyone else does, that yes this is rather sneaky, but I can assure you, that after working for both asda and waitrose, that ALL COMPANIES ARE LIKE THIS, not just tesco. At the end of the day, business is business, and tesco, asda and sainsburys would have not got where they are today, if they did not work like this.

I'll just bump this up again, as you are still on, pwebb1985, because this is one of those grey areas that I have heard so many different answers to at different times. :)

Thank you for coming here to try and explain the policy, pwebb1985. :) However, I can't help thinking that you're contradicting yourself by stating, in your first post, that only one coupon will be taken per transaction for items not bought. Two posts down, you're admitting that it's up to the individual store's policy and it's all down to area/supermarket rivalry (which I can understand). So we're back to square one really: the fact that there is no nationwide policy

(I'm just worried that people will read your first post and find it a bit confusing - I know for a fact that several Tesco stores in my area have a different policy)

It was very interesting to have pwebb's comments in this post. It seems to me Tesco's policy is that coupons can be accepted if an item has not been purchased as long as the store stocks the item. However the percentage of vouchers against total spend is at the manager's discretion and whether they take the vouchers at all is at the manager's discretion.

I used to shop in Tesco at Southend until they got a new manager who changed the policy from taking coupons to 30% of spend to just one coupon per visit so I moved to Tesco at Basildon where I have been happily using 30% coupons per spend but they too have a new manager now and the policy there is now also one coupon per visit. So regrettably Tesco are now off my list because I have an Asda nearby who will happily take 30% coupons per spend and a Waitrose who will also happily take 30% coupons per spend. It's a real shame cos I was enjoying collecting clubcard points at the same time but a pound in the hand (well pound in the coupon) and all that.....
  • Hummm, my local has changed again! - from the 10% only to 1 per type (no limit) :j

So I did a bit of shopping tonight, used a £3.00 Joey and £1.50 Mag one off a £20.10 shop - also to bag it all in, I had a goodwill token of £15.00 from another store due to a problem with their mobiles and only spent £0.60 in all! :money:

Well within my target for this month now.

Again this is store/management specific, but in many stores, provided the product is stocked, and you are only using one coupon for a product that you havent bought, that would be ok. If the voucher was worth £5, you could use it on a £5 transaction, but again this is provided the product is stocked.

However can I point out to all money savers - vouchers must always reach the qualifing spend. Eg - If your total bill was £4.99 and you wanted to use a £5 coupon - you can't, as change can not be given on coupons reguardless of the value.
Even if you say you don't want the change, we still can not accept it. SORRY
