I was using a self scan checkouts but one day a manager approached me and said I could only use one coupon if I wasnt buying the item. I told her that I had never been told this before and that different cashiers said different things. She said that no, Tesco policy was one coupon "total" if the item wasnt purchased.

I came home and emailed Tesco. The email I got back was basically one coupon "per manufacturer" if the item was not bought.

After that, each time I went back, I want to checkouts with cashiers (rather than the self scan) and each time, I asked would they take coupons. Each time, I got different responses but, in the main, they just scanned them.

Then, one day, about a month after(i think), the manager who had approached me before, came along with a security manager in tow while I was at the checkout. The cashier had scanned my goods, I'd asked if I could use coupons, that I'd bought some but mainly I hadnt. The cashier told me that I could use coupons "one per manufacturer" and that it was okay as long as I didnt have more than one of the same. The cashier was scanning my coupons when the manager asked her what she was doing. The cashier responded "scanning coupons", the cs manager told her that policy was "one coupon - total", the checkout lady said no, one per manufacturer. The manager said, no - one coupon total! They were disagreeing what their own policy was! I tried to explain that I had emailed HO but she wasnt listening. She then said that I had to go to the office.
I went... only to be told that because I had been warned previously about only using one coupon, I was now banned from ever returning.
If I did return, they would phone the police. I tried to explain that I had emailed HO and they had said one per manufacturer and they didnt care as I hadnt done what that store had told me. What I should have done after getting the reply was check with the store first.
Even when I pointed out that the checkout lady who had just served me quoted HO policy, they still didnt listen.
I've complained to HO who have said that I had to contact the store. I've written to the store who have written back saying that "I continue to be no longer welcome at the store".

Thanks for sharing that. What a horrible expereince!

Where did this happen so |I knokw where not to go?
  • My local store doesn't have a self scan, today I did a big shop for me using, lots of clubcard voucher bonus points and also taking advantage of the 20% off kiddies clothes. I spent £181 which was reduced to £150 with BOGOFs/discounts then after I used various shopping vouchers it came to just over £120. I went to a cashier I had never seen b4 and just said can I use these and she accepted them no problem. Other times I have a definite NO you cannot - it depends, on cashier/mood/weather etc.
;) I am the only Voucher Queen in my village LOL ;)
  • I went to Tesco in Ollerton last week and the girl took all my coupons, no probs. Went yesterday and cashier called supervisor over who said couldnt take more than 1 of the same type so handed over all different ones no probs.

In my local store, it definitely depends on the cashier. Accordning to CS, they will take 3 per shop even if you have not bought the items. I always tell the staff this if they query the vouchers and there is not a problem. There are however 2 young male cashiers who take as many vouchers as you can give them, often commenting something like 'oh, how can you be bothered cutting all those out??'. To which I reply 'you know how it is when you're skint!!' Look out for student males and avoid middle aged females at all costs. Be nice and get a bit of chat going and you should be alright.
    :p
  • No luck at Southend today. the guy was very definite.....the rules have changed and they cant accept any vouchers for stuff not bought. I think it must be true as he is one of the ones who will usually take anything:(
  • Still being taken at St helens and at prescott, as i have been to both today and used coupons at both.

Oh and were still accepted at st helens self scan yesterday.

I'd rather not say which store I've been banned from in case they let other local ones know! I'm still able to go to others in the area with no problems.

I went today, spent about £80 and they took £12 in coupons, no problem. Just scanned away.

I make sure that I do buy at least some of the items and try to keep it to no more than 15% of the total.

Last week Tesco's at Ingleby Barwick had put a label on their self scan tills saying if you had any coupons you needed to contact a member of staff, my mam went in today and purchased the actual product with a coupon but it was the assistant who scanned it through !

I'm a little miffed about this as i have loads to use and nice to use them for your shopping, I'm not greedy with them neither.
