I've just been reading Take a Break, which I try every week in the faint hope of winning something, anyway in the cookery section is the headline credit crunch meals, guess what is considered cheap -trout fish cakes - costed at £6.92 for 4 people and lancashire hot pot using lamb chump chops - costed at £7.24 for 4 - do you think they are having a laugh, I must admit when I'm cutting back I don't immediatly think of buying trout!!!!
It makes me hopping mad when i see articles like that. Honestly it may be credit crunching for the idiots who write the articles but not for the rest of us..and lancashire hotpot using that kind of lamb? ..beggars belief:rolleyes:
I read one on school lunches last year..everything was bought an prepacked and they thought it was good valueI think the cheapest was £3.50:rotfl:
so far a NSD for me again. I have one eye on the weather debating wether or not to go out! Hmm think i will stick a loaf on and use some powder to make up some milk..Off to see what i can conjure up with ingredients..and armed with oldstyle recipes:D
Have a good day everyone.

I am going to try and have a month where I spend only the minimum. My freezer is full, so I must use it up!
Chilli today, using only what I had. Mince, beans, jar of sauce, onions from the garden. made a banana bread too as had three going soft. Had the rest of the ingredients in, so no spend today!:T
Got to keep it up though:rotfl:I Believe in saving money!!!:T

Hi all
I have decided that I NEED to cut my shopping budget as my electric went up £16/month and my heating oil has gone up £40/month so I have to make savings somewhere!
We are a family of six - me, hubby, sons aged 5, 7, and 9 and daughter aged 3 - oh and another one cookin!
We usually manage to spend about £80/week so I have set myself a target of £280 for the month - about £40 less than normal. I am really hoping I can do it for alot less but want to take it slowly at first! I think this forum is fab and have spent the last two days just looking through all the tips and recipies - yum yum!GC Sept - £147.75/£280

Hey Peeps....can't remember if I told you about the turkey thigh & value gammon joints I'd cooked  but this morning I weighed up my packages before putting them in the freezer.
I can't recall exactly how much each joint was but they were around £4:50 each & I've allowed a bit for the gas, foil etc to estimate a total outlay of £10 for this project. The actual meat available to be used for cold cuts is 500g turkey & 900g gammon SIZE=1]OK! I took cook's perks into account too[/SIZE & if I've worked it out correctly, that makes it 71.4p per kilo or there abouts.
I'm quite pleased with that, considering I KNOW there's no added water or nasty additives going into my sarnie--just the odd lettuce leaf now & againFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.

Hi guys
I was given some runner beans yesterday - is there anything I can do with them other than cut them up and steam/boil them?
You can make chutney out of runner beans (plenty recipes on google), but I can't say that I've tried making it. Delia has a reciped for spiced pickled runner beans on her website - maybe check that out. Otherwise, you could just blanch them for 3 minutes, cool off in cold water, dry off and freeze for use at a later date (I did this a few days ago with some free RBs). I also like them chucked in veggie curry.
Hope this helps.GC May £178/£250 NSD0 -
ok - i think i might cry.
The day before i went on holiday my dad kindly cut my lawns whilst hubby was at work. Came home at wekend and mum had bought some bits for us so just eaten out of fridge. Went to tescos today and got some freah meat to freeze. Got home and went to freezer in garage only to find that it was switched off and smelt vile. I think 2 and a half weeks ago when dad switched off the lawnmower he also switched off the frezeer!!! Loads of food ruined - 2 whole chickens, 4 packs of mince, 2 packs of chicken breasts, 2 packs of steak, 1 gammon joint, 4 packs of salomon fillelts, scampi, bread, milk, soya mince, quiche, frozen things id made like soup and pasta sauce and pizza bases to name but a few. My carefully planned work gone in the flick of a switch. All the way round tesco i kept saying i dont need that its in the freezer and now its in a bin bag in my wheelie bin.

Have done my first little shop of the month and spent £16.25. Have made a chilli in the slow cooker and split it into 4 portions and they are now in the freezer, going to do the same with a bolognaise.
I'm glad I have joined this challenge, it makes you so much more aware of what you are putting in your basket. I kept putting stuff in, changing my mind and putting it back on the shelves because I didn't really need it.Grocery Challenge - May £20/ £802009 Sealed Pot Challenge #305 - £216 /£3000
