has anyone got the number to call to order this 29.99 deal? preferably not a 0870 or 0845 number as i have to use my mobile

While BT do have some geographic numbers, have you considered just calling their 0800 numbers from a phone box?

    Regards

hi bextech , thanks for the reply, currently i have no phone line and i'm using mobile broadband. so i can go either way, i have nothing to cancel. what do you reckon ??

If it was me I'd get just broadband from Virgin Media, don't bother with any regular landline service, with a router get an ATA (analogue telephone adapter) such as the Linksys PAP2 and connect regular phones corded/cordless and set up a VoIP account - many with no monthly charges. If you aren't going down the router route then some of the other Linksys range have a basic router in them whereby you can connect it directly to the cable modem (supplied by VM) and then connect your PC to the ATA. Either way the PC doesn't need to be on to make and receive calls and you can get a local 01 / 02 number. You can then make use of the mobile for any inclusive minutes and the VoIP line for other calls and for people to call you on if they don't want to call a mobile - also useful in instances where you may not get credit due to having no landline - as you have a regular number - they often don't check further than that.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

i'm only doing all this for broadband, no interest in landline phone calls.
with virgin media can you easily get a wireless router as i may have a lodger who would want the internet too?
the only thing that concerns me with VM is that i had ntl before and it was a nightmare.
i figure with a bt landline my options are a lot more open as to broadband providers.
    thanks

Plenty of cable routers available, available from PCWorld, Dabs, BroadbandBuyer, Broadbandstuff, Digidave and many other places, even Virgin Media's online store.

If you opt for 4/10Mbit or 20Mbit broadband they will give you a router (or at least up to last week they were).

A BT line does mean you have more choice of broadband provider, but as you say you aren't interested in the phone line, hence cable winning there as you don't need a phone line with cable - I didn't have a phone line for 3 years or so and just used a Linksys PAP2 ATA wired up so you wouldn't know it wasn't a regular phone service, 3 years service all for just £10. I do have a mobile but are too tight fisted to pay for a contract, just an exspense I can do without. Only reason I have a phone line now is cable offered it installed free, line rental free and calls package free.

I just mentioned VoIP as it can be made to appear like a regular phone line and you don't have to pay anything other than for any calls made and people can ring you cheaply / free and not at extortionate to mobile rates. With cable you don't need the phone line and you don't have to go down the VoIP route either - it's all your choice. Most people I know are like me - tight fisted and won't waste £20, £25, £30+ on a mobile when you can use a landline and spend just around £10 or no landline and use VoIP and spend hardly anything. I do have a mobile, but now PAYG and on Vodafone family so those calls between us cost nothing, just the £1.17 per month as we share the fee. Plus no one likes calling a mobile due to the high cost, get can call landlines for next to nothing.

Problem with using ADSL it matters how far you live from the exchange and the quality of the line to what speeds you'll get and the vast majority get nowhere near the advertised speed.

Why pay for a BT landline to get a broadband service when you can get broadband with cable without one and the speed you pay for is the speed you get (other than when the throttle you for a few hours for downloading too much - which is still better than the small caps other providers give you before they either charge you per GB extra you download or kick you off or throttle you speed down to dial up for the rest of the month).

As I said I'm tight fisted, I never pay the asking price for anything, don't like wasting money and only buy things if I have to. You have to work out whether you are happy wasting money on a BT landline just to get broadband if you are not going to use the landline even if the landline works out cheaper than calling from a mobile. Afraid I can only explain the situation not say what you should / must do.

Not true at all. Any line rental provider can get a line installed. Blame Tiscali.

Why blame Tiscali Drunkstar, I did a bit of research and found that BT and The Post Office, who use BT were the only people that install lines. I take it you're a BT fan then? :)
  • If Tiscali are that wonderful why didnt you ask them to provide service at new address.

If you try to move back to them or any other supplier before the 18 months are up be aware you will be asked to pay BT, as a single payment, a sum which is equal to the total of the standard line rental charges (currently, £11.75inc. VAT per month) left in the 18 month minimum period.

Because Tiscali dont install telephone lines. The only thing I like about Tiscali is the package that I am on, although you do get what you pay for and my connection goes off and then back on within seconds 5-6 times a day, but for 18 quid a month for line rental, anytime calls and BB I cant really complain to much.

I am fully aware of what I would have to pay BT to change to any other provider, but I feel I am sadly being held by the danglies :( Oh hum.

Madasafish, Plusnet, Phone Co-op, UW plus many others will install a "BT" line. As Drunkstar said any provider can approach Openreach and arrange a new "BT" line if they wish.

  • Hello! Just want to say this site is great!

Thinking of signing up to Virgins 2mb broadband as I have no BT line in the flat I just moved in to. Anyone had any experience with tis service from Virgin? I am not a heavy internet user but do like to use it for some online gaming. Would this 2mb service be good enough?

    Thanks

Any company that offers line rental in the UK can have a line installed by Openreach. I repeat, ANY. Just because a company refuses to it doesnt mean they cant. I repeat, blame Tiscali because they wont do what they can. But feel free to talk to me as if I'm an idiot, its cute.

  • just to clear up everything!! anyone can get the offer but its a reactive sale only, BT advisors cant promote it, if you ask for it you will get it, if they say no speak to a manager and they will let you, its an 18month contract if you go to another company you will be charged the full line rental, if you go to another company and want to go back you will!! be charged again as they change the line type which is unuseable, any company can set up/install a line they just choose not to, BT RETAIL!! buy the lines from BT OPENREACH a seperate company and any company can buy the lines from them but the find it cheaper to ask you to go to BT retail, take SKY for example, they can set you a line up but it costs £250, who in there right mind would go to SKY if they had to pay that? so they send you to BT. why dont you just everything from BT? Line BB and TV, they have some good deals on, give you the max speed dont cap your allowence cheap calls and free HD tv
