4k can easily be spent in some London clubs, so I am told.

The club is going to fight you every step of the way. You are not the first person this has happened to. You need to build a very strong case against them if you have any chance of getting anything back.

I suppose he got off lightly, if you drink so much that you don't know whats going on around you then you are asking for trouble and as for his friends dumping him in the club he needs to find some new friends.

I would suggest you ask them for a reciept detailing what the money was paid for as i assume they would have records of all transactions as they need it for banking etc and the computer system should hold all records of any processed payments

Trading standards-see if any other complaints (although,like you probably any previous 'victims' may have been too embarrassed to report it) and Police. The police is the only way the cctv can be viewed-I only found this out when one of our employees was assaulted at an airport and without the poice being involved not even the airport were able to view the tape.

Bare in mind that just a single drink can cost well over £100 in some clubs. Not that i have ever bought one you understand? It certainly wouldn't take much to run up a bill of £1000 for just a few drinks & 'Hospitality' in some clubs.

Do you know if you used your card to pay for anything else, say, a round of drinks?
Your card might have been skimmed?
It would be easy to find out your pin number if you were watched by someone over your shoulder.
Easy to put receipts in your pocket for the amounts, check the time on them too.
Please don't feel ashamed, you have been a victim of something bad here.
I think you've been robbed, but you might have to right it off as a bad experience and pay the bill. Just don't feel ashamed of going to a club, lots of people go to them.

if his card was skimmed why has he got the recipts in his pocket ???

Im no master criminal but surely if i was gonna rob someone of money by skimming their card the last thing i would do is give them the reciepts because then they will stop their card and i wont be able to get any more money.

Some double bluff if it was skimmed
