Daughters looking at a new place to rent in Sheffield and I put the postcode in to see if they do that area and its not cabled there but it says they can offer virgin media down the BT phoneline if there is one.
I don't think they even have a phoneline installed so this could be expensive couldnt it? Whats the best way to go about this as she needs the internet for her job. I don't want her to move in and find she cant get it or its going to cost a massive amount of money to set up.
Do you have to have a phoneline?

I don't think they will want to go with a mobile phone broadband for everyday use as I heard they were not nowhere near as reliable for connection.
I hope theres a BT line installed how much will it cost to have put in if there isnt?Thanx

if she is moving to a non-cabled area, then virgin is not (even near) the top of the list of providers, put her postcode into the samknows.com checker to see which LLU operators are available, sky/be/o2 are all good, orange/cpw etc.are...er....less good.
what does she need the net for, proposed average usage, budget etc...Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Circa £125 last time I checked (might be an offer on).
To connect a new or non working line.
£124.99 12 month month contract.
£29.99 18 month contract.

What sort of lease will she be on, their are cheaper landline suppliers if she only needs a 12 month contract.0 -
Apparently there is a BT line installed they are going to double check though and ask the present tennant what internet connection she has if any. The tennant was away on holiday so she may have taken a laptop with her and they might just not have seen a modem anywhere as it was a lot to take in first time round.
Idealy it would have been ok to have sky to get tv reception, bb and phone on their cheapest deal then stick to freesat once the 12 months are up if they stay but its an old building with some history and I don't think they will allow a skybox. They can ask though just in case, is sky broadband ok?
Not sure of the lease yet but I don't think she would want to commit to more than 12 months at the moment
When you have a bt line and use it for adsl do you have to have a phoneline or can you just have the broadband and no phone? as they may choose to use just their mobilesThanx

Checked at samknows and these were listed, which are good out of these, they have to watch cost really they dont need a massively fast one, she is used to and fine with is it 1 or 2 gb that we have at home with virgin media
The following services are available in your location:
BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale SDSL
AOL LLU
O2 / Be LLU
Bulldog LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Tiscali LLU
Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)
She needs the net for average daily use and some studying
What does LLU stand for? She won't want to go on dial up internet.Thanx

if she is considering sky tv, then the LLU broadband from sky is reputedly excellent, both for service and value, 2nd choice would be o2/be for a higher price but similar quality.
be aware that sky etc. will insist on a 12 month contract, though if she is already considering the option, then i assume she is intending this being a fairly long term addressUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
I'll check out the costs of those two then and if sky works out cheapest and she can have it installed if she is on a 12 month contract anyway she could have that put in but it will all depend on if they allow the dish on the building.
What about sky support? arent they nortorious for 0845 long wait support calls? Do they have free bb support?
The bt line is extra on top of the sky package isnt it?
Would you say to avoid BT broadband then?Thanx

Just been looking on the bt site its quite confusing when your used to virgin media cable.
The bb with them seems to be 18 month contracts so thats no good, I just looked there thinking it might be cheaper to go with them for both.
The o2 does look ok but its £12.50 a month then the bt line on top?
The bt line starts at £10.50 to £12.50 evening and weekends, £14.95 unlimited so its both those costs together and no cheaper way of doing it right?
If they can get a free skybox and the see speak surf offer it will prob be better to go with sky and if not then the o2 one should be okThanx

the bt line is an extra cost, i don't know the figures myself, but sky's lowest package is around £17/month for tv+broadband, bt is another £11 or so, bt broadband should be amongst the best, but sadly isn't, on my been there-done that-never again list.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Thanx a lot youve been very helpfull, things are a little clearer now and they should get sorted out ok now. Virgin does seem to be cheaper but they have no choice, at least o2 have the free wireless box too which will be handy and if they do have the chance to instal the sky I have seen there are some new customer offers for a free sky+ box so I'm hoping landlord will allow itThanx
