We have found out that the present tennants do not have a phoneline with BT, they said they didn't want to have to pay a £125 connection charge. Apparently though the tennant before them did have a phone so we just are not sure if it will cost £125 or not. From what it says on the bt site bt dont tell you until you have actually ordered a line installation its not clear if you find out before the installation date or not or if you have to pay a fee if you cancel once they come to instal if it turns out the cost will be £125. Obviously my daughter wont want to pay that high installation cost either but they really would prefer a phoneline to get a better broadband connection. Is there no way they can find out without putting an order through if BT are going to charge them the £125?

The present tennants use orange mobile broadband £15 a month, its an 18 month contract with 3bg usage and up to 1.8Mbps connection speed (I don't think it gets that fast) They said it isnt as fast as ordinary broadband but it is ok, they don't sound like they use it that much really so I'm just a bit concerned about the usage if it will be enough. An 18 month contract is a lot to sign up to if its not going to be sufficient. My daughter does not download films or music but she uses it for work related study, shopping, browsing, email, facebook, messenger and banking etc, then theres her boyfriend, I'm not sure of his usage. They did say that they started off with T mobile mobile broadband and they had difficulty getting a connection as the house is made of thick stone walls. Some of the other mobile broadbands offer faster connection and slightly higher usage but if they tried any of those do they allow you to take it back for a refund and cancel the contract?

Also wondering how this mobile broadband works as far as security is concerned? We have always been on WPA security settings through our router and expecially as she uses it for banking etc security is a priority

They both have 'Three' mobile phone contracts would it be worth considering mobile broadband through them?
    Thanx

You can always call a different broadband supplier who offers landline services, if they can offer you an inclusive service without having to intrigue from a BT line then it will be much cheaper then having BT come and fit/activate the line. If they cant offer you the service without an active BT line, then you will now have your answer without having to get a technician called out.

If they really only use it solely for browsing then a 3gb usage would be enough. Internet browsing uses a minuscule amount of bandwidth.

Who offers that kind of service apart from BT? I thought all other broadbands needed a BT line for this

I did ring them and they said the line is deactivated so its the £125 connection.

I did suggest to my daughter that there wouldnt be anything to lose if she asks the landlord if he would consider having the line re-activated as they really would like to have a phoneline and proper broadband. Its worth a try anyway. He has put them on a 6 month agreement though for a start so he might not want to do it.

Cant find any other suppliers that reactivate a bt line cheaper, have looked and have no idea where to find any so my daughter and partner are going to book bt do it and pay the £125, they just don't like the idea of being capped with the mobile broadband and thought as they will be there for some time it prob in the long run might be worth it. They were going to get the phone broadband and tv offer as new customers.

Problem is we are trying to call sky to ask them some questions and we have been waiting over 50 minutes and still waiting. We chose selection 'new customer' and I cant believe they do this to potential new customers, it reminds me of why I left them. I'm serously wondering if it really is worth having sky and if it would be less hassle just having o2 instead.

What do you think are they worth the hassle? would it be better just to have o2 or any out of this available list in the area?

The following services are available in your location:
    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    BT Wholesale SDSL
    AOL LLU
    O2 / Be LLU
    Bulldog LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
    Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
    Tiscali LLU
    Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
    Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)

I have rang them and asked about offers etc but there hasnt been any budging on that. It is probably harder because they know there is no cable in the street, perhaps the £29 instals are for people who are moving from virgin or have cable in the street. They know there is no competition in this area. I will check it out though

I looked into that offer which is good but ties you to an 18 month contract which isnt really practical in this case as its for a rented property, they may not want to stay that long depending how things go.

However since you mentioned the above I found the thread where it is also mentioned that sky were doing a credit back of £125 for having to instal the new bt line but it wasnt clear if they are still doing it. While preparing myself for another massive wait on the sky phoneline to ask I was looking on sky.com and the live chat box came up so I thought I would ask there instead and she told me straight away that they would credit the installation charge back to the account once the BT bill arrives with the installation charge on. It just has to be sent off to sky with the claim form they are going to post.

If it goes through it will be great so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I asked if I could still have the free sky+ box, sky see speak & surf for £17 including the credit back and free installation. She said it would be £30 installation but I was happy as long as they credit the £125 so I let them ring me.

After it had all been arranged I rang BT who arranged a set up date earlier than expected so I rang sky back to change thier installation date to an earlier one to match. In that phone call it became apparent it that getting see speak and surf isnt guaranteed in fact she said she couldnt see on the order all she knew was the tv was booked for install. She said without a telephone number they cannot check if the line is suitable for broadband and if it isnt it cant be put in. I'm a bit annoyed that this wasnt made clear to me as it was mainly for the broadband that sky was chosen, the tv was just going to be a bonus and the phoneline was being put it just to get the broadband it isnt really needed as they have mobiles with lots of minutes.

The lady told me once the line is in it has to be active for 5 days before broadband can be put in then a wireless broadband will be sent out for self installation. I cant be sure if she meant it has to be active for 5 days for them to test the line or before they will put the order on for broadband. I'm worried now in case the line isnt suitable I assumed it would all be installed in one day.

Go here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/dsloperator.php?provider=easynet and open the list for your area and see if your exchange has Sky/Easynet equipment installed. If it has stop worrying because a newly installed line will be ok. Just remember though, don't transfer your line rental over to Sky or BT will want more money off you for breaking the 12 month line rental agreement and Sky wont pay that.

    It says on samknows

    Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU

So that should be ok should it?

I dont understand about the line rental for the phoneline how do I get around that? I thought that the £17 agreement for the free sky+ see speak and surf included that. All I've done is ordered that offer, do I have to tell sky that and will it effect the offer?

You are doing 2 things here.
    1. You are asking BT to install a new line which will incur a cost of £129.99 (I think) and this will also be subject to a 12 month contract with BT for line rental @ £10.50/month by direct debit. This includes Free evening and weekend calls but not 0845 or 0870 numbers. Break this contract and you could end up paying for the months left or £70.
    2. You are asking Sky to supply telephone calls, broadband and Sky TV for £17/month. Now, for this deal you may be committing your line rental to Sky also, which would break your contract with BT. Perhaps you don't need to do that in which case you will be paying Sky £17 + £10.50 to BT making £27.50/month in total.
You really need to make some calls to get all the details spot on or you could be landing your daughter with expense she doesn't want.
I'd better add that BT WILL NOT install the line without a 12 month contract.

Oh gawd this is so confusing I will have to call them and recheck it all. I thought it would end up a total of £27.50 anyway just using the bt line for the broadband. The phoneline bt is installing is the free evening w/e calls upgraded free on new 12 month contract at £10.50 which is the same plan as sky would be anyway so it makes no difference who provides it so long as they dont end up wanting to be paid. The sky offer is for the 3 things though at £17 surely sky must work around that if they know its a new contract with bt that cant be broken.

I've been trying to find the bt contract on the site but cant find it
