Considering myself something of a cheap-chocolate afficionado, I'd actually recommend Tesco for chocolate - their 100g bars of value chocolate are excellent, and only 25p!
The only reason to pay more is if, like me, you can't eat half a bar and for self-preservation reasons you want/need your chocolate in smaller packs.....

Got a Lidl near work, so can pop in quite often.
All these get the family seal of approval:-
Smoked Salmon about £1.99
Jams & marmalade - esp the cherry jam.
most of the fruit juices - also the isotonic drinks are cheap.
Chocolate & cream deserts - nice big tubs for about 23p each
Muller fruit corner lookalikes for 21 - 23p
good cheese selection
Bin bags - strong and good price
Croissants
the carpet cleaner sprays are the best we've used - even got marks up which the industrial cleaning machine couldn't.
dishwasher cleaners.
Our fussy cats go mad for the tinned catfood @ 35p
Malibu imitation tastes like malibu (apparently)
the tomato ketchup, which I only bought in an emergency (although 'emergency' is a bit strong in a ketchup context) was rated as better than Heinz by our fussy teenager.
Fresh pastas are delicious.
Bellarum capuccino powder is very nice - I use it at work.
Only problem is that I'm spending more & more in there - especially with their offers.
Have shopped in Aldi reasonably regularly and find them excellent as well.
I always find the staff quite cheerful & helpfull, although my mum found them a bit impatient when she tried them out - she's used to carefully stacking her trolly at the checkout, so it comes as a culture shock to have to pile everything in as quickly as you can :-)0 -
Lidl - I know a Michelin starred chef and he recommends their olive oil!
Also all the chocolates, cheeses, biscuits, sliced meats and mushy peasNice to save.0 -
Best buys - Lasagne out of the fridge. Lovely and full of quality ingredients. Good size and only £2.99.
Biscuits. Good variety and just like branded ones.
Tinned stuff. All that we have had have been good.
Batch loaf.
Yoghurts. All varieties and types are yummy.
Frozen meats and salmon fillets. Much better than tescos in taste and half the price.
Wine. Good savings against other stores and all are quality.
special buys - Bought ds a mountain bike last year. It is wearing really well and was over a third less than a cheaper version from the bike shops/halfords. Looks good and although well used is not showing any chips etc. Other bargains are to be had but look around as somethings are not that cheap. The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0 -
LIDL

AND
scotch eggs...65p....over £1 in tescos..

and l like their hairspray too.....0 -
I have been watching this thread with envy since it started as we have no lidl or aldi stores in Oxford any more (used to have an Aldi many years ago, but they flattened it to build a hotel
)
Anyway, Lidl have finaly got the go ahead to build a store on the Garsington road in Oxford - HURRAH!!!
After being refused countless times cos the local council thought the store might impact the near by Tesco and Sainsburys ...... I have no doubt it will!
Lets hope Aldi can get a foot hold again too soon.0 -
Lidl
Buy
Chocolate its fantastic
Fruit Juices are great as well
Veg and Fruit can be nice but you have to look0 -
sorry if this has already been mentioned - but the thread is VERRRY long,
i was always a bit cautious about buying meat products from companies like Aldi, Netto, Lidl etc...
but i have heard that these stores (being of foreign origin) have food standards far more stringent than those currently applicable in the UK.
an example would be the recent food scare of the red colouring ingredient (Sudan1?) which resulted in far fewer product recalls from sotres such as Aldi/netto/Lidl compared to the Sainsbury's & Tescos of our country.
Now, i may be wrong, but i heard it somewhere - and thought i'd pass the info on

Lidl's - What to buy
Definitely their extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegars, ice cream (during the summer they had some that were a match (i thought even better) than Magnum's Almond version. Orange Juice/Apple Juice - litre sizes. All their household cleaning stuff is good too - washing powder, etc etc, bin bags & then weekly they have a special offers sheet - available from Thursdays, get there early though, the bargains go very fast!
They don't give away carrier bags so remember to take your own!! Their trolleys need a token as well.0
