Give that man a round of applause:T :TTurn the boiler off using the selector knob - downwards position. Turn the ch selector switch to bottom - permanently on. Turn the ch temperature control to fully clockwise - maximum temperature. Now turn to boiler to winter operation - fully anti-clockwise....
And just for future reference Drea - your LL may *not* simply let himself in to your new home with your knowledge. He should always contact you first, and give you at least 24 hours notice in writing , and you can still refuse or rearrange to a time to suit you. Yes, you needed him to check out the boiler but don't let him make a habit of it.
Now you have mastered your GCH with EH's help, you may have time to take a look at the useful "Sticky" up at the top of HBS&R board on tips for new tenants.
You may want to keep the photos, along with plenty of others of each room, as a record of the condition of the property at the start of your tenancy, together with the inventory.
Good luck with your tenancy
