Powergen are a shambles !!

DO NOT TOUCH POWERGEN with a bargepole, they have been featured by BBC LOOK EAST news programme several nights running, they have a shambles of a record of widely inaccurate billing, call centre staff that are poorly trained and cannot solve issues. Watch at 6.30 pm tonight on BBC 1 if you live in Norfolk/Suffolk/ Essex/ Cambs/Beds/ Northants/ Herts etc.
When they took over Amerada we switched to Scottish Power online Dual Fuel and have been very happy with the service.

I only lasted 6 months with Powergen and that seemed like 5 years. Saying that they have not transferred my gas to EDF yet. Maybe I could be with them longer than I had originally hoped
  • Even the local MP has raised questions about them in parliment this week and Energywatch (watchdog) rates them the worst supplier !

Is that true, I can't find any specific documents on Energywatch and only references are on places like Uswitch who also add their own rating to determine their supplier ratings(that said they seem to rate highly on most of the comparison sites)
  • Energywatch spokesman Mr. Sidebotham on BBC TV news this week said this company generates the most formal complaints they deal with on consumers behalf (or something similar!)

I have posted previously about my experiences with powergen, they still cannot get it right, they have me down as having astandard electricity, when if fact we have an internet account with economy 7. and I am in credit to the tune of £140, there is an electric bill due and I have worked out it should be under £50, so I am going to look at switching, will get powergen to refund me £90 first leaving enough in the account to clear the leccy bill.

    Total so far £14.00!!
  • I missed it but I think they were the subject of the financial bit of BBC's Breakfast this morning. This was billing problems I believe.
When moving home two years ago and using Powergen at the previous address for a long time decided to transfer their supply of gas and elect. to new address. They sent a final bill for old address of £11 and a bit it was paid promptly by cheque which debited bank account a few days later. Some three months into supply at new address a letter and red bill arrived for said £11 and a bit. Letter gave 7 days to pay "outstanding" amount or face legal action. 'Phoned them and after providing cheque number and date it was debited plus offer to send copy of bank statement and cheque stub and after checking there were profuse apologies. By the time the grovelling requested letter from them arrived it was too late and the transfer to Scottish Power had already been initiated. They even then sent another letter asking why the transfer had been requested!
So no, wouldn't go near them again even with a disinfected 10 ft bargepole.
  • Latest news is OFGEM are going to fine powergen if they carry on billing little old ladies 4 figure bills that a shop/school would expect !

I saw a story on the news wires today which might be in the papers tomorrow. It was about a couple who got a 6 month electricty bill of £60,000. They rang up Powergen, got the india call centre who informed them the bill was correct! They then kept ringing powergen up and had the bill recalculated 3 times down to about £99. Powergen are now embarassed about it and have decided to write the bill off.
Their billing seems to be abysmal and it must be losing them lots of customers. Also is the savings made by having an indian call centre really worth the loss of customers and bad publicity?
I am currently switching from Powergento London Electric.

I must be one of the lucky ones then, I've been with Powergen for years with no problems, both gas and electricity. 1a_y_grin.gif
