Bandwith throttling-how to avoid?

Options
Hi
Im with Tiscali and they seem to be throttling my speeds around 6pm. Does anyone know the times of day that Tiscali throttle bandwith- or does it vary?
Furthermore, is there any way of escaping bandwith throttling?

Seeing as all ISP's throttle, that would make little difference.
Depends what you are doing, if you're downloading, wait to do it online when the Americans are online and Britain's aren't.
Most sites will work fine as will email, but if you are watching say the BBC iPlayer, then things will take a while.

Nonsense. There are plenty of ISPs who don't artificially throttle.

I think you're mixing up throttling with natural bottlenecks. The internet isn't noticeably slower when the yanks are on.

Especially not that, since the yanks can't access it.

    I've not been throttled.

Can you throttle Yanks? There's one or two...

the Big 5 ISP's (BT, AOL, Orange, Tiscali & Virgin) do some bandwidth / port throttling aimed at heavy P2P and people who use excessive Bandwidth, but they usually throttle peak times (9am to 6pm) and let you loose overnight.

You may just be on a over subscribed Line. Every ISP line has a contention ratio of either 50:1 'Domestic' or 20:1 'Business' basically it's how many other people share that perticualr ISP's internet connection at the Exchanges.

So of you have a few people D/L P2P it quicly eats up the bandwith for everyone else!! sounds like something like that is happening with your ISP.

I moved to IDNet from Tiscali, and I couldn't be happier. They are very upfront about not using bandwidth throttling, traffic shaping or port blocking. They also have a one month minimum contract, which is nice.

    Ditto Newnet.

I've been with IDNet for some years, complete reliability and no problems (apart from the price, but you pays yer money etc.). I also have a friend with Talktalk, who pays a lot less and has no problems either (curses!), but there is a risk.

I was referring to the downloading aspect, seeing as most are seeded from America (I'm talking torrent's here, seeing as that is the main aspect of throttling)
And no not all, but the majority all throttle. The rest just cone the traffic giving priority to people not on Bittorrent.
  • So, once your on a crappy ISP like me, theres no way to dodge the throttling? I still get ok speeds (4-6 meg on an 8 meg line) but I despise having any taken away from me
