I love it! My first loaf was a medium basic white, using Hovis super strong flour - and oh my goodness! When I cut into it, it was SO fresh, I've never had bread like it! I'm now being a bit more daring and I have an apricot and almond loaf in the machine (waiting for the beep to add the fruit!), which will be ready in about 3 1/2 hours. :T

So, all in all I'm over the moon with my purchase - if you're thinking about buying one I would recommend it 100% :D

One word of warning - watch the waist line, the bread is so lovely compared to shop bought :D.

A quick serious question. In a bread machine you can't really substitute ordinary flour for strong flour but can you do the reverse - substitute strong flour for ordinary flour if you're baking by hand?

I know, and I've been making so much that I have to do something with it (i.e. eat it!). I'm sure the novelty will wear off evenually though.

I don't know about using ordinary flour for hand baking, but when I tried making bread by hand it didn't work and I think this may have been one of the reasons. I have heard that some people use half strong and half cheap flour in their bread machines though, I might try this at some point.

    Hi all

I want to buy a Panasonic breadmaker SD255 because everybody raves about it.

I want to buy it from John Lewis's website because I have a £10 gift voucher.

Each time I go online it shows as out of stock. You can get them to email you automatically when it comes into stock which I have done several times. Each time I get an email to say it is back in stock, by the time I get there, it is back out of stock.

It is especially galling as it was showing as being reduced to £87.30 one day (meaning that I could have got it for £77.30) but it's academic anyway because it was "out of stock".

Question - are John Lewis just getting a small number in at a time from Panasonic or are there loads of people waiting to snatch them up as soon as they come into stock? Wow they must be good!!!

    Bother!!!!

    Best wishes all

Not sure whether this helps or not but you could save the voucher until you need something else from John lewis and buy from here instead.

The SD255 is there and also the SD254 which is identical but without the raisin dispenser, it just beeps when it needs the raisins adding. I saved and bought the 254 about 30 months ago and have never looked back :D

You'll be glad you got one when you buy it.
I've only had one bad loaf since i got mine.
I forgot to put water in, but still the birds ate it.

    Hi patchthedog,

I think there are plenty of panasonic breadmakers around, just not in John Lewis by the sound of it. As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the Panasonic quick questions thread.
