Tomorrow I'll check what I've managed to save, sort them out, and then I'll clarify with you how to keep 2 individual records.
Sleep well, I know I will now :rotfl:Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Hi
Well it took sometime to sort out, but I managed to retrive around 50% of my documents, although I've lost some important documents, I'm happy with what I managed to retriveClick here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Good to hear that all was not lost. It was quite a drama following your attempts to retrieve your files yesterday!
As I've said, I keep flash drive back-ups of a few things which I really couldn't do without, but which I don't want a thief to get at, like my bank details. I love the way banks tell you not to write anything down, then give you a username like EV347T14VTR !!
I can sincerely recommend that Cryptainer program for storing sensitive Word documents, on the computer and off it.
I've also been thinking about backing-up my entire computer in case of hard drive failure rather than anything dramatic. The Acronis program you spoke of is one program that will do this, but 'Which Computing' recommends Norton Save & Restore as being the easiest solution, or Norton Ghost, if people are more technically minded, which I'm not. They are more expensive, but Which say they are the only two their testers found relatively easy to use. I would couple that program with a basic 500gb external drive, or maybe a bigger one if I decided to keep video on it too.
Like you, I pre-date the digital age by quite a margin and, although I ended up teaching children with computers, I never received the basic training that I should have had. I suppose the best I can say is that we have come quite a long way since the days of loading up a program on an old Acorn machine using a cassette tape, then having it do something rather unremarkable that could have been acieved with paper & pencil in half the time!0 -
Tut tut, the password to EV347T14VTR was too easy to guess. You really must do summat about that overdraft0

All this techie stuff Dave is way above my head, to some extent my age is against me, I kinda get embarrassed asking the younger generation for advice, that being said, my biggest problem is being afraid "To Investigate" a simple explanation of that is look what happened when I lost my documents, I'm from the "old School" if it's not broke, don't fix itClick here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

Yes, I tried putting it on a USB stick and it's easy. But I'd start by putting it on your computer first & then experiment, using a test document, not your most critical files till you are sure of it.
When I want my sensitive Word docs, I just click on the Cryptainer icon and the loading screen comes up, I type in the password & there are all the files. As I said, even my tech-phobic wife can do it. That's on the C drive (main computer)
As regards the mobile Cryptainer, I have just managed to send a Word document over to it into what I called 'Vault 1,' then I shut it all down (had a problem there because it wouldn't let me do that till I'd closed Word.) I then browsed back to the USB, started it from 'My Computer' and, hey presto, after I put the password in I could reach my document again. In other words the USB is running as Drive J and, after I click on the symbol labelled 'Vault 1' and put in the password it loads up the Cryptainer, which is running as Drive K. Presumably, you could have Vault 2, 3, 4, 5, etc but I'm a bit short of time and I've not read the instructions today at all. I guess that means it's intuitive, or I'm daft, or both!
I must dash to make dinner, but I don't think you will have any problems with Cryptainer if you read the notes etc and just play around with some disposable test files. Whether it will give you large enough capacity is something only you can judge. I don't have a lot that I need to protect, just Word files.
Good luck!0 -
As I said in an earlier post, if you have either Seagate or Maxtor hdd installed in your pc, a limited version of Acronis TI 10 is available free fro the Segate site
I'm probably getting a Maxtor, so I'll look at that, but after reading the Which report, I'm tending towards paying for the Norton, just to make my life easy. But you're right, it ain't money saving! (Nor is 'Which Computing' come to that. I shall cancel it soon, as it is full of 'padding.' Had a free trial, though.)0 -
