I cut a slit in the top and cook it in the oven. Or open it out, and turn it in to a haggis & mashed neeps cottage pie.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

A Halls one, in the microwave. More time for toasting the Queen, the haggis, Robbie Burns & the lassies.
C0ck-a-leekie soup (Baxters) for starter and cranachan for dessert. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
How spooky that this thread appeared. A Scottish friend of mine has just given me a haggis made in his home town. Unfortunately there were no cooking instructions so I phoned the butcher who makes them. He said you only boil them if it is the "pudding" type. Mine has the little metal clasps on both ends and he said to wrap in foil and bake in the oven or cut into slices and cook on the George Forman. So there you have it from the horses mouth HTH"Men are generally more careful of the breed(ing) of their horses and dogs than of their children" - William Penn 1644-1718

Well, I usually simmer it in pan of water but might just microwave it this year. I've got my tatties and my neep saved my last week's organic veggie box. Unfortunately I will be unlikely to get to the butcher before 'the event' so have bought one from MrT:rolleyes:.
I always have my neeps and tatties mashed separately:D0 -
Helloo - sorry not very traditonal but ....
Slice up a few rasher of bacon into strips and fry them till crispy - pop them on a baking tray in the oven at about 150C to keep them crisp - then using the same pan place slices of haggis (about half an inch thick) and gently fry them in a bit of butter/oil along with slices of black pudding till they are crispy on the outside. Pop these into the oven with the bacon to keep crisp and then pop a bit more butter along with a teasppon of dijon mustard into the pan to make a dressing.
Place a large handful of rocket / watercress salad on a plate then pile the crispy meat on the top and drizzle with the dressing...
Serve with a glass of Laphroaig.....trust me it works!!!

We have a 2lb McSweens awaiting us for Saturday night (my parents are meeting boyf's dad for the first time - boyf's family are scottish) which will be done in the pressure cooker as per last year. First time my parents have had Haggis I think!
For previous decades it had always been boiled (wrapped in foil) in an aluminium cauldron but boyf thinks he threw it away because of the risk of Alzheimers though boyf's Dad can't remember what happened to it........:rotfl:0 -
I've another vote for baking it in the oven, although I don't have a microwave and my hob is broken, so I don't have much choice at the moment anyway! I love haggis0

we heat ours in the microwave, then bake for a bit longer in the oven to dry it out- I like it crispy!0

I buy the ones from Tesco's and steam them in the plastic casing for about an hour and a half. I've never had a problem with it cooling off quickly. I love haggis and this is the only way I've ever prepared it. Stays moist and very flavourful.
And being a good OS wannabe, I use the leftovers up to make chili. It really is very good. DH was quite impressed. Of course I think he's impressed with anything that doesn't involve a tin and can opener.
Totally discount my reply if you'd like since I'm american but my DH is Scottish if that helps.. :rotfl::rotfl:Take the first step.

I have always done mine in the microwave, take off the outer covering and put it in a casserole dish, cook on high for 5 minutes, then take it out and break it up with a fork, put it back in the micro for a further 4 minutes and then stand, with the lid on for one minute. I use a potato or ice cream scoop to put it on the plate. I ash the tatties and neeps with butter and a dash of nutmeg...scrummy............ there is always too much for the two of us so on Monday we will be having grilled bacon, tomato the re-heated haggis and fried bread for breakfast........Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0
