Microsoft are continuing its support until 2015 so you have plenty of time to hate it.

Does that support include regular monthly security updates until 2015? For some reason I'd got the impression that MS were discontinuing support for XP quite soon.

Where is this debate going? Select an O/S and hardware grade that you are comfortable with...simple. There are so many post's on here that are flawed technically, "consumer opinionism" at play, factually are incorrect and being an IT professional find them quite amusing to say the least, there is no right or wrong system only the wrong type of choice that you have made at the time and only through operation have became to realise this, I remember when everybody slaged off XP and portrayed Win 98 as some kind of "martyr", thankfully that learning curve ergo win98 has been long learned and safely past on. If you are comfortable with XP then continue its use, Microsoft are continuing its support until 2015 so you have plenty of time to hate it.

This is true. Debating whether to use Vista or XP is a discussion about choosing the right or wrong Windows operating system to use. Whereas, debating whether to use Windows or Mac is a discussion about choosing the right or wrong type of operating system to use.

Hopefully your making this cultural distinction clear will render it unnecessary for Mr. Hawking to reach for his Browning and create any learning curve ergo martyrs before he himself "pasts on".

I think, as a basic principle, that there's a very great deal to be said for the non-technical user sticking with the operating system that they know and which works (for them) until others more expert have got all the bugs ironed out of the next one and they can then upgrade to it safely, without encountering problems that they themselves don't know how to deal with and there is a wide user base of people around them who can help them with any difficulties they may have.

Having used vista previously and changed to XP after getting fed up with all its "teething problems", I decided to keep Vista this time on a brand new Dell machine that I purchased the other day. First start of the system and everything looked slick and squeaky clean. Copied some photos from old PC and then tried to delete some of them with no success (Vista stating that I would need permission to perform the delete). This wasn't a system folder (was a folder I created on the desktop) and I was logged as an administrator (no other user accounts) with no other software running. Tried everything possible with no success and some folders were just not budging at all. Installed XP and hey presto. Running really fast and with no problems with all my software and hardware fully compatible. I for one will be sticking to XP for now.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

No it isn't. One is not right neither is one wrong - they are variations and developments of the same thing.Whereas, debating whether to use Windows or Mac is a discussion about choosing the right or wrong type of operating system to use. Utter nonsense - both have their advocates as do both their detractors but to suggest one is wrong is just fanciful.

Hopefully you're making this cultural distinction clear will render it unnecessary for Mr. Hawking to reach for his Browning and create any learning curve ergo martyrs before he himself "pasts on".

I do apologise once again if your comments are intended as an amusing aside, however humour is often lost in this medium.

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
