Don't know about being "In and out in 15 mins," at Lidl. The one nearest me often has only 1, 2 at a push checkouts open. As most shoppers usually have a giant trolleyful, that 15 minutes can be spent in the queue unless some kind soul lets you in front with just your armful of cheapies!
As to why do some folk use Tesco? Our other close town doesn't exactly give much choice. Since Tesco was built we no longer have butchers, bakers or greengrocers. We're down to 1 newsagent and 1 healthfood shop too. Previously the town had at least 2 of all those mentioned.
Worse things will have happened in the world today...

  • I think it's because Tesco have dominated the UK!! There is only 1 postcode in the UK that Tesco does not have a store, and that is Harrogate!

Personally I only have the choice of the co-op or Tesco, so I choose Tesco, although I think that the co-op food does actually taste better!!

What i find with tesco compared with asda is that asda is cheaper like for like, but they have few offers ie 3for2 or bogofs so if you buy the same brand all the time asda would be cheaper, but like me say i want some coffee i just look down the isle and they will always be an offer on one band of coffee or another and usually it will a good offer.

Thats why asda always come out on top of the basket of food because brand for brand they are cheaper.

Plus add to that tesco clubcard vouchers which have paid for this year a Meal at cafe rouge a meal at pizza hut pending, and paid for a full car service at nationwide autocentre also any 5p off litre petrol offers and finally those news of the world £5 off £30 Asda just cannot compete with tesco with our family anyway.

You have to weigh it all up.

Some people don't have an Asda for a fair few miles, and the distance to travel to asda might offset the savings.

The clubcard points (which equate to 1p per pound) can actually be used as 4p if you use the points elsewhere.

I personally shop at asda, there's one walking distance from me and I have no idea why, but I prefer it :p

The reason people do their shopping at Saunsburys/M&S/Waitrose (and i'm only talking about their FULL shopping) IMO is due to snobbery!

Completley understand if they want a very nice bit of seabass from the fishmonger area, but why pay 10% more for a tin of heinz, it's no god damn different!

I didn't realise that Sainsbury's was perceived to be much better than the other biggies.

I doubt many people do their full shopping at M&S, do they? If they do, perhaps it's because they can afford it and they like the quality. It's no more snobbish to shop at M&S than it is to buy your clothes from Gap rather than Primark.

Waitrose possibly is a little more expensive than the other main supermarkets, but there are other things people take into account. I do a good percentage of my shopping in Waitrose - it's close to me, the parking's excellent, the customer service is second to none, they have QuickCheck, their own-brand and fresh products are of good quality, they have higher ethical standards than the other supermarkets, and my local store is light and pleasant - all in all it's a nicer 'shopping experience', if I can bring myself to type such a ghastly phrase.

I said myself in an earlier post that Heinz baked beans are the same whether you purchase them from Aldi or Waitrose, but it's not just about saving money all the time. Sometimes it's a case of weighing up saving a pound or three against time, convenience and where you fancy shopping on a particular day.
  • I di dmy shopping at Sainsburys for the first time in a very long while last Tuesday and I was very impressed. They have gotten a lot cheaper and the store was clean fresh and light. I will certainly be going back there. However the best supermarket in my opinion by a very long way is definately Lidl.
    Loving the dtd thread. x

    What a load of cobblers:rotfl:

Sainsburys is not in the same league as M&S & Waitrose for a start.

Sainsburys is the same as Tesco, Asda & Morrisons.

I wouldn't do my full shopping at Waitrose, but they do have trollys at my local Waitrose so some do. Perhaps because its close to them (its my closest supermarket).

I find Sainsburys is probably a bit cheaper for me, as I really like their own brand stuff.

You got one hell of a chip on your shoulder, how do you manage to carry your shopping home while lugging that around:rotfl:
  • I used to shop in Tesco but the local branch always have half empty shelves & the change in store layout makes it frustrating. I now shop in Morrisons which I find cheaper & the goods - fruit, veg, meat & bakery much better quality. I use my Tesco credit card & acrue points in Morrisons !
I did shop in Tesco this week as I could not get parked in Morrisons ( too busy ) - never again, as it was expensive & I forgot so many things due to daft layout. Asda is coming soon to our Tesco town but oh for a Waitrose in
    Inverness- bliss !

I find the queues in Sainsbury's much worse than any other supermarket I go to (i.e. Waitrose, Tesco and M&S). Quite like it, though. Nice range of products, including decent fruit and veg.

I won't comment on either Asda or Morrisons.
