  • I love tesco because it's such a pleasant shopping experience for me. I like it that it's clean, shelves are always stacked properly & are full, never any queues. It feels like the store has been taken care of. Now I'm lucky cos in my town there are 3 ASDAs to choose from, and they all feel grubby - like the clothes have at some point been on the floor, the fresh fruit & veg never look that good, the fresh meats sections are always half empty, there can often be queues and also they have an infuriating £1-to-get-your-trolley policy, which I find really really annoying cos I NEVER carry cash, so if I'm at ASDA I have to get out, get the kids out of the car, go to the cashpoint, get cash changed into pound coins, get trolley - all before I've even got into the blinking shop! It's such a hassle & Tesco have loads of trolleys which dont' require any prior palava...
That's why I shop at Tescos.

In my glove compartment I have a tiny tin about two inches square that used to hold mints, I think. I keep a few pound coins and a bit of silver, specifically for the £1 trolleys or for parking machines in car parks, because I rarely have cash either.
  • thanks HC. Tried keeping a few coins in the car, but it always seem to get spent somehow.

  • I was always a MrT shopper because I really thought that it was the best place for value/cheep food. I dont drive and have a family of four so I shop on-line. I have however done my last few shops with MrS and I found its the same price, but felt that it was better quaility. I can only buy the low brand stuff but it is good. As for the tesco point I never have that many say £30 per year.
  • I can't stand Asda! The quality of the fruit and veg is awful, their own brand goods are way below the quality of 1) Sainsburys and 2) Tesco.
Their special offers are always on carp like Coke, Pot Noodles, chocolate cereals, disgusting ready meals etc. The store is dark and messy and the people are horrible! I also do a comparison on mysupermarket and for the things I buy Tesco always comes out ££s cheaper.
I have a Tesco superstore 6mls away in 2 directions and a Sainsbury's about a mile away. I tend to do a big online shop at Tesco every 3/4 wks and buy fresh fruit and veg at Sainsbury's as I like the quality, especially their Basics range. As well as club card points Tesco regularly send me money off vouchers ie - 1x £12 off an £80 shop and then 5x £8 off an £80 shop., to cover 6 wks.
I don't use them all, but even with a delivery charge of £3.50 I am still saving

No, thank God. Do you have to put half a day aside for grocery shopping if you live in London?

My main problem with grocery shopping here is that most of the supermarkets near me are anything but super - they're all Tesco Metro/Sainsburys local etc types which have very small ranges and higher prices than the regular stores, and the store in Elephant & Castle is terribly stocked with enormous queues! There are a couple of larger stores within 2-3 miles, but it's a bit of a pain if you need to buy anything bulky or heavy to struggle on the bus with it. OTOH, until recently I managed quite well with going to the market for fruit & veg or getting a veg box, occasionally getting meat from Borough market or the larger supermarkets, and only popping into Tesco for milk & basics. But what I wouldn't give for a decent size Sainsburys!
    2015 comp wins - £370.25
Recent wins: gym class, baby stuff
Thanks to everyone who posts freebies and comps! :j
  • Since Tesco was built we no longer have butchers, bakers or greengrocers. We're down to 1 newsagent and 1 healthfood shop too. Previously the town had at least 2 of all those mentioned.

That is why I hate Tesco, their strategy is clearly to gain a monopoly by under cutting the small shops till they close down, then bumping up the prices when they have no competition left.

We will only realise when it is too late what they have done to this country.

I hate our local Tesco mainly because the Customer Services treat the customers so badly. Tried to return a bottle of Tesco's own brand wine which was corked but staff refused to refund or exchange because I didnt have the receipt. When I pointed out that it would show up on my Tesco Club Card Account they refused to listen. Wrote to Sir Terry got a nice letter back saying that they should have checked my CC Account and enclosing a £10 gift token. In addition head office sent me a full refund for the cost of the wine and the local manager supplied a replacement bottle FOC.
This hasnt changed the attitude of the CS staff as the are still reluctant to check the CC Accounts of those who have forgotten or lost receipts. If I stand near a customer who is getting grief from CS staff I think nothing of telling them to write to the MD and even supply the address.

The wife and myself have recently switched back to shopping at Tesco's after a few years of switching between Asda and Morrisons (both are on the way home from work for either of us). We used to shop at Asda of Morrisons because it worked out cheaper, although the quality of some items was dubious (fruit, veg and cooked meat in particular). However, the cost of the weekly shop seems to have increased in recent months (probably due to the credit crunch).

One week we decided to shop at Tesco's, purely because it was convenient (Tesco's is only 4 miles down the road whereas the alternatives are 19/20 miles away). We found that it was roughly the same price for a weekly shop compared to Asda and Morrisons but the fundamental thing now is that the quality of the produce appeared to be far better.

Since then we've started shopping at Tesco's regularly again. Also as an experiment, we are experimenting with the fruit and veg from Aldi as friends and family are more than happy with it for the money. I think maybe the best/gourmet frezzer items might be test driven at some point (items such as there beef wellingtons, frozen gammon joint.
Apparently I am the original tight fisted Yorkshire Man!!

I shop in Tesco as it's 1 minute from my front door and other Supermarkets are about 30 minutes away at the closest.

If the weather is fine and I feel lively, I do walk to the others though, as Tesco I find unfriendly and I like to scour for offers.
