when i start doing weekly shopping when me and my partner get a house i dont know who to shop with. although my partner works for sainsburys and gets 10% off everything will it still be dearer?
  • I am on a very limited budget and so check the price of the food that I need for the following week's meal plan out with My Supermarket. I then use that list to compare against the independents and buy from the cheapest - no store loyalty here - just can't afford it. Don't have to worry about petrol cos I buy a bus pass monthly which covers all of my travel. I have Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Aldi, the Co-Op and soon, a Waitrose in addition to the independents. I do find that for me Sainsbury's is where I buy a lot of my food - not all of it. If something I need is priced the same in Asda, Sainsbury's and Tescos as the value ranges often are, then Sainsbury's wins because of what I think is better quality and. as as already mentioned, higher ethical standards.

    Hi abaxas,

As this is more of a shopping thread I've moved your post over to the Shop but Don't Drop board to see if you can get more replies.

Asda is about 20 miles away for me whereas tesco's is 2 miles away!
They also don't deliver to me!

Our Tesco is brighter, cleaner with wider aisles. I tried the new Asda in the next town a few weeks ago when it just opened and although cleaner, the aisles were still narrow and I eventually put back what little shopping I had and headed to Tesco. Parking is so much better too.
The only time I may pop into Asda is when I know they are doing a special deal on something I like, at the moment it's the Nescafe double chocca mocha coffee sachets, £2.10 at Tesco, 2 for £3 at Asda.
Oh and of course the clubcard points.

I always used to shop at ASDA as it is my nearest superstore but find that their range was getting smaller and I found quite a lot of items out of stock. Once I discovered Club Card points, that was it.
  • It's interesting that peoples view Waitrose as being significantly more expensive than Mr T's. The Grocer magazine does a weekly price comparison on 33 everyday lines (comparing T's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Sainsbury's etcc...) and the gap between Waitrose and T's has closed significantly recently. The last time i looked Waitrose was only £2 more.

Of course you can spend a fortune in Waitrose given the great range of fresh foods they have but on general everyday lines there's not much in it. And of course the service is significantly better and the staff more knowledgable.

And it's far better for the blood pressure. Much quicker too, if you use Quick Check. Definitely worth the pound or two more.

My misses insists on going to Sainsbury's, we will never be rich.

Last week i did a like for like of my shopping list from sainsburys/asda,and found that asda were only cheaper by bout 3.50,then the delivery charge,so worked out at roughly 1 pound dearer at sainsburys, and as asda are terrible for subsituting items,my money is gonna go to sainsburys everytime.

If i dont get it delivered, then i will go to asda,as my sainsbugs is 8 miles away(i aint walking that, and by the time ive paid over 5 pound in bus fares,i might as well have it delivered).

Roll on next summer,we are getting a Tesco, and without a doubt i WILL be shopping there.I love tesco, and its the only supermarket who's bread dept smells lovley, not doughy.(thats is apart from m&s,but cant afford them no more).

SWMBO always shops at Sainsburys - or rather she shops online and they deliver it ! - Tescos are always late on delivery and can never find us + their patrol is more expensive than the regular garages !! Tesco & Sainsburys they cost about the same ... but sainsburys are much more friendly.

Waitrose is also good because they have things that others do not - but ifyou buy run of mill brands they can be a bit more expensive.

Asda, is the only other one - except aldi and lidl but all 3 are just always jam packed - avoid at all cost !
