Tesco - why do people shop there?

Do you think if I got a couple of hours work there a week I would get the staff discounts & perks:D quote]
I honestly wouldn't rely on it making a great deal of difference - I used to work at Sainsbury's and even with staff discount it was still cheaper to shop at Tesco!
However since Asda moved to the town I have generally shopped there. It also means I can take the shopping home alone via pushbike instead of having to wait for my husband to drive me up and having to put up with the kids whinging all the time! :rotfl:SMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)0 -
I would rather go to Lidl - in and out in 20 mins with no hassle, and lots of continental goodies!0

I don't have a Lidl or an Aldi near me (or near enough that I would be bothered to go there), but Heinz Baked Beans or Robinson's squash are the same everywhere - Waitrose or Lidl - so there's no point in any snobbery when it comes to branded goods.
Where they differ, I suspect, is when it comes to own-brand lines and fresh fruit and veg.0 -

Apart from the obvious (M&S & Waitrose) I think of the big 4, Sainsburys is far & away the best for own brands:D0 -
I tried Asda a few times when I lived near one and I too thought that the fruit and veg was rather tired before I even bought it - and went off too quickly.
I also had several occasions when I got "caught out" on buying packets or tins and getting them home to find either out of date or bl**dy near it!
Also find that Tesco own brand range is good and better than either Asda or Morrisons - and I am not a brand junkie - so my shop ends up a fair bit cheaper in Tesco than Asda.
Don't have one close now - and TBH don't miss it - but I do miss Waitrose: which was always my favourite of the supermarkets 20 odd years ago when I lived near one. Mind Tesco was tacky in those days - and Sainsburys has always been over-priced so Waitrose was best value then as well."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

I have tried both Lidl and Aldi - but I just find the range of fresh meats, fruit and veg sadly limited. I do like some of their continental things, but as we use very few tins or packets they don't work out that cheap for me.
I do go in for things like chorizo sausage (vacuum packed) some of the foreign cheeses that I never see anywhere else, and they have some lovely live youghurts at very good prices. I also keep my eye out for specials on things like olive oil, balsamic vinegar and soy sauce.
The other thing I love is those little bottles of wine at about £1.19. Not so keen on them to drink, not that I drink much (although the Zinfandel is tolerable) but I do like to use wine for cooking and these work out cheaper than a big bottle and are great - I small bottle of red being fine for 2 or 3 spaghetti bolognese and 1 of white making usually 2 meals - sometimes 3.
Aldi also do the best bread sticks (with sesame seeds on) that I have ever tasted - yummy!"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
It seems to be the only place that sells creamed sweet corn, for sweet corn soups. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

tesco is 3 miles away so is within cycling distance. Other supermarkets are 12 miles away. I would love to shop at local shops but they are only the likes of spar
For the past couple of weeks I have been cycling to T every day but only for the daily mail free dvd, ....... and the organic chicken and toilet rolls and so on because I get sucked in. So cycling is good because I have a limit as to what I can carry, either that or I only take 50p for the paper0 -
I live a long way from any supermarkets so I got to Tesco every 2 months sometimes Lidl as well and stock up as best I can.The reason I go is because it's very cheap compared to the shops where I live and there is more choice. What I save on bread alone pays for the extra petrol used and I can fill the car with cheaper petrol too while we are there.
People say you should shop local but if I did that here I would never eat very much.A lot of things here are double the price some even treble  and they don't have any own brand products at all.My local shop doesn't ever sell anything reduced to clear either,I don't see why should I pay over the odds for stale bread & cakes so it's Tesco & lidl for me every time0 -
