to be fair dells buying power makes them pretty cheap, it would be hard enough to go and buy components from different places, factor in your time, postage costs if from the internet and beat their prices on most machines (ignoring their overpriced RAM)

Not any more. Ignoring your own labour costs (as that isn't really the point), you can build your own pc that'd work better and cost in components much less. Custom PC recently did an article where they built a similarly specced PC as the Dell XPS 630. Their's performed better overall and was something like £250 cheaper!

Indeed. They do get large economies of scale, but keep most of the money from this. Afterall, they target a market that wouldn't know how to build their own PC, or would be too worried to try. Though their lower end systems are good value compared to a self build.

i agree with you there.....i think people would be amazed at actually how simple it is to build a PC from scratch

I built my 1st PC years ago wiith a mini tower box and a psu I found in a skip (and an old monitor from work), I paid £25 for a processor and £30 for a motherboard £12 for a graphics card. Have never bought one yet.

I bought a PC once and that was one of the biggest mistakes in my life (it was even in the A list of PC Pro at the time). Not sure I could ever really be tempted to buy one again. Unless it was vastly cheaper (which it isn't).

Hence why PC's are bigger than MAC's in my honest opinion because there is so much scope for the user to have freedom on what he can do with it and its bloody cheap to do it

Build your own then...alot cheaper and you know exactly what goes in it....and not only that it gives you better knowledge when something goes wrong

I did say "once" and it was past tense. That was about a decade ago. I've been getting on fine building my own PCs ever since already thank you. ;)

Never had a Mac. I presume you were basing that on the minference of that one post. Can't imagine I'd come across as being a Mac fanboy or something from any of my posts.
