I have made quite a few monkeys now, the last few I have knitted little clothes for them as I used plain mens socks. I bought a pack of 6 pairs up our market for about £2 they were 2 dark brown, 2 light brown and 2 cream. My daughter gave me the idea to make the mouth and ears from an opposite colour and they look great but did look a bit plain. I will try to get OH to take a photo of the ones I have left to show you them dressed up once I have finished them. Just got to knit a jumper for one and two pairs of boots and they will be finished.

Now I am back into knitting again I have ordered a pattern for an Aran type cardigan and will have a go at knitting it for my eldest daughter for xmas once the monkeys are out the way (a relative gave me the wool). Not sure if it will be a bit too much as I am a bit disabled in one arm now and havent really knitted for years until I saw this thread and decided to try some clothes for the monkeys.

Once everybody sees your monkeys you won't have time to knit the cardigan 'cos you'll be too busy making more monkeys.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

the majority of us make our hats from either the toe piece thats left over if its large enough, if not you can stitch the ribbing onto it , IYKWIM. the scarf is again made from scraps left over.
If you have nothing left cut up another sock. I use any odd socks or trainer socks..I have also made hats & scarves from any odd pieces of material i have around in my sewing boxes. .

    Question?

Can I make my monkey backwards lol let me explain I am using kids sock. Would it be possible to make the legs out of the foot part and the body out of the leg part and is so how can I make the head less square.

Yes it is possible as i have done this today but with a ladies 4-7 size tho as otherwise the pattern would have been upside down on completion.
with it being a childs sock yours would just end up with a little body. you would also have to round off the at the ribbing end by sewing a curve..

if you are good with the needle and thread you could make it as normal and make a small pair of socks to attach to the bottom of the foot and that would lengthen the leg. if you get what i mean.

  • Ok.. once you have made a few you will be able to be more adaptable by swopping around the feet and body etc.

zls i made one this way - by mistake lol i sewed the wrong side and didn't realise till i had already sewn and cut the legs but thought that i would just carry on and see how it came out. i've just finished puttting it together now and it looks fine the legs are a bit shorter but not so much that it looks strange or out of proportion. the sock i used were ladies 3 - 5 1/2.

i'm hopeless when it comes to clothes etc. can anyone give me some ideas on how to make hats and jackets as in how to sew it etc. untill i started making sock monkeys a few days ago i never even owned a needle and thread. It said inthee instructions i followed about doing backstitching I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS IS ha ha i just bodged it and i'm extremely proud of my ever growing brood of monkeys. my friend even asked me to make her 2 kids one each for christmas today :) i can't thank you ladies enough xxx
