I used a pillow for mine and it seemed like exactly the same stuff that you would buy from a craft shop only cheaper.
Sussed out what was wrong with my arms and legs - more haste lass speed - i tried to sew them using the machine (being lazy and impatient)
will do them by hand next time:rolleyes:BR as of 14/1/2009

miaoww - I tend to fold in the seam on the tail/arms/ears before sewing on, which makes it look a bit neater. I also do all the cutting out, pinning and machine stitching first, then go back and do all the stuffing and hand stitching at once as it's much quicker. It is tricky to do the hands/feet on the machine, but I've just about got the hang of it now. You'll get better with each one. Can't wait to see your first ones.
angelkay - I have bought the really cheap Ikea cushions at about 50p each, which contain a lovely soft stuffing - enough for 3-4 monkeys.0 -
Well I have turned one sock monkey into a little treat hamper for a friend for Christmas using a mug, a mini bottle of rose wine, a couple of bars of chocolate from the Tesco selection boxes currently on offer, a sock monkey, some cellophane and a bow - total cost under £4.Property buying/selling timeline - currently into week 21

I love the monkey with a mug idea, I have made a sock monkey for my nephew, its his 30th and he is mad on Liverpool FC so I knitted the monkey and red and white stripey hat and scarf, was wondering what else to do with it so will get him a mug from Sports Direct and fill it with some cheap toffees or something.0

How about putting some chocolate footballs in it?
Sports direct also have bags of football team jelly sweets - think its just the bag thats team related though.
When I went in last week for some Man U stuff they had pint glasses 2 sizes of mugs and piggy banks as well. Normal size mug was £2.99 pig was £3.49Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended

I use quite alot of stuffing in mine as I like them to be fairly firm. I buy it from a craft shop 450g for £2.10 and it is lovely and soft. It says on the label that it conforms to BS5852 and is 100% polyester. I can generally get 2 big monkeys out of one bag with alittle left over. I prefer to do the hands and feet and ears by hand as I am more in control of the shape that they are then!!!
Here's a few more.0 -
not sure if the photo will work as i'm not sure how to add them but this is my first sock monkey that i made tonight. he needs eyes and his arms are very skinny which also makes his tail a bit thick but overall i'm quite chuffed athow he's turned out. i stitched him all by hand too0 -
Oh wow AngelKay!! That looks soo cute!!
I think i want to make one now....was it easy??0
