The bottom monkey, I got them in a £ shop, but not one of the big name £ shops, one of those that often charge a little bit more, for example, these came on a card of 3 pairs for £1.25. Though, they were not ideal as the material didnt stretch very well.

The places that I have found est for socks so far is either Tesco or Primark, though primark ones are not great. And I have my eye on some large male monkeys with socks from Asda. there like chunky checked pattern.

This is a question to those of you who sell your monkeys. I was told today that there are strict rules and regulations about the change of use of a sock into a toy etc. by Trading standards. I know about the fire safety regs. and about the eyes and not being for children under 3 etc. but this is the first time I have been told there are restrictions about the change of use from a sock into something else. I am going to see if I can find more about it, but just wondered if anyone else had heard this.

OK - reporting back on what has happened so far. I spoke to TS on monday and got a call back today, he is going to clarify exactly what to do in the next day or so. Basically if they are being sold as toys they have to be labelled with the CE mark and be subject to the Toy safety regulations, these regulations are quite strict and probably not something that I would want to get involved in. If sold as collectibles the restrictions are not as great and I am hoping that they can be classed as that which means they have to be labelled not intended for people under 14. Also if they are sold on the internet you have to adhere to the distance selling regulations, which I already knew about and was observing anyway. So if you are selling your monkeys the above is something you must be aware of in case someone was to report you to TS.

  • Distance selling - if you sell over the internet there are certain rules that you have to observe. The main one is the right to cancel within so many days and also the right to return and get a full refund. You also need to have your name and address clearly displayed, should they wish to contact you. I have a website so have to have it on there, plus I am registered as a business seller on Ebay so the same rules apply. If you google distance selling, there is quite a lot of information. If you are selling your items you should also register with the HMRC for tax purposes, even if you dont make a profit, and the other bit is the safety regulations. So it does all get a bit party poopish, but better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks Gemsmember. Thankfully I do all that anyway. And I have craft insurance and checked with my insurance company and mortgage people that I could do it all. Phew, I was worried about that. :D

I saw a business advisor a few months ago and she told me i didnt need to register with HMRC and it was just a hobby (which it is but its a hobby i sell)!!!! But the Inland Revenue told me that I had to register with them before I had any form of website set up for selling. Needless to say I didnt go back to the 'business advisor'.
  • Hi all, I am new to making sock monkeys and am just gathering all the equipment that I need. What sort of stuffing do you all use and where do you get it from? Also are there any other bits that I shouldnt be without?
I am going to buy a sewing machine, dont have huge amounts of money...so again recommendations would be good. I have been looking around for second hand but not had much success
