I've just had a closer look and it looks to me like the timing is out (this is going to sound so technical!) The fork bit that hooks the top thread doesn't seem to go round at the top when the needle is down - not even sure if that makes sense to me!

Do i need to lower the needle or is it already how it should be?

  • Oh boy, where did you get this sewing machine from??? He he :)
I think your best bet might be to get a real life person you know understands sewing machines to come along to see it, it's hard on the web and I am by no means an expert!

My first ever attempt at sewing anything that doesn't resemble a button on a shirt Lol! Did it by hand in about 5 hours. Will have to get DD to show me how her ancient sewing machine works as I may be hooked :o We've called him Oswald and I may try and dress him tomorrow.

Well done cydney, Oswald looks great!

My update - was doing quite well even though it was a struggle with such little socks. Yesterday I tried to do the eyes and it all went wrong... I wanted sewn eyes and to cut a long story short, I have a mess where I used some old darning 'cotton' which wont let me unpick it - grrrrr.

Mind you, was sprung yesterday when sewing on the arms. DS1 correctly guessed it was a monkey. DS1 (14) is now halfway through his own sock monkey so I guess my lot wont be having them in their stockings! DS2 is now showing great interest in making one himself...
