MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Should Kate return a sale frock with a full price receipt?

  • Hell yeh!! I've lost count of the number of times I've bought an item, only to see it vastly reduced a few days/weeks later. Now I keep all my receipts and so if this 'opportunity' arose, I'd take it....

She might like to ask herself whether this is honest behaviour

Why do you think this is called the moral dilemma?

    Yes,

Why not, it's exactly the same as getting the shop to price match the full price one to their own sale price.

I'd have no qualms about this.

The customer has an original receipt and exactly the same dress as the store sold her. It is up to the store to decide whether or not they will accept the return. Legally, they do not have to accept it and give a refund - they choose to. So why is it fraud if the store chooses to accept the item back?

One of the reasons I shop at Amazon is that they will refund you the difference if they decide to drop the price of an item you bought within a month.

    My thoughts exactly.

I have done this after Christmas for the last 3 or 4 years, I save a fortune.:o

Like some of the others on here, I think if the stores can reduce an item so much on Boxing Day then the price must have been over-inflated to start with, and I'm not prepared to stand for that.

I try to buy as much as possible in December using a credit card, and I keep all my receipts. Many stores will refund unwanted Christmas items if your receipt is dated December. I also do this a little this time of year, in the Summer sales but not as much as I tend to wait to buy stuff in the sales anyway (can't do that for xmas pressies unless you want to give everyone shorts/t-shirts or buy stuff a year in advance).

I am also very good at remembering where I bought what and how much I paid. Come the first week of the sales I re-buy anything that I had previously bought that is now reduced by a fiver or more (which is practically everything). It takes a lot of organising but the money saved adds up to a lot as I have 4 kiddies and extended family, all of whom have had various games/clothes/books/toys as pressies. I save around £100 - £200 by doing this I reckon.

If I get my refund quickly enough then the original purchase, the second purchase and the refund are all on the same credit card statement so I never pay the first price. :p

absoulutly I would so this without hesitation!
Date I decided to clear my debt: 03/12/08
    Debt started with: Loan - 2195, Credit Card - 1738, Interest free overdraft -500 = TOTAL - 4433
    Current Debt: Loan - 0, Credit Card 1 - 1346, Credit Card 2 - 906 Interest free overdraft -0 = TOTAL - 2252
  • Oh yes definitely she should buy it at the cheaper price and return at the more expensive price, after all we are here to save money aren't we? I have done this on many occasion even with my catalogue if I have ordered something and it goes on sale I call them up and ask them to credit me the difference and they always have done providing it is within a month or so. Its less hassle for them then me returning it and reordering it. I also did this with a slendertone machine at a chemist which had a £30 off promotion - I was well chuffed - so always keep your receipts people!!!

I have been known to do this at places like Argos/Tesco but whether I would do it at a small independant is another matter.

I think that the multi-nationals will quite happily milk money from us in other ways (eg: the milk price fixing thing/mis-leading price tags on shelfs etc) so I don't feel to guilty.

edit: Sorry, just re-read this and no pun was intended.:rotfl:

  • Zork - seeing as everyone else would do it and so far you are the only person who wouldn't, maybe you have way too much money to be using this site in the first place??? Shops aren't in the habit of losing money, they sell over priced items in the first place accumulating up to 100% profit on some items, when these items go on sale this we are still sometimes paying more then what they cost at wholesale so nobody really loses out - everyones a winner baby!!
