As far as i know, virgin handsets will take a t mobile sim card. It worked ok for me.

Actually T mobile phones will take a Virgin Sim Card but...... Virgin phones will not accept a T mobile Sim..

The reason behind this is T mobile make money on either because it is their network.

Same goes for Tesco and O2 as Tesco is a virtual network using the o2 infrastructure

  • You can buy a unlocked handset from anywhere and it will work with any operator in Europe.

when you say "from anywhere" do you mean i can walk into the carphone warehouse or a similar shop and buy a brand new handset from them which is unlocked and comes without a sim card? i thought all new handsets were sold as part of a package for a specific network. the only handsets i have seen on sale and advertised as "unlocked" have been on ebay.

i am a bit ignorant about mobiles as you can see! thanks v much for the tips.

Generally it seems that Nokia handsets are easy to unlock and there is lots of advice on here on how to unlock them yourself. Motorola is a bit more tricky I think, and they need a cable etc etc.

No longer true ! Dct4 type phones up to 6230i were easy to calculate a code for... New Nokia's have increased security and quite often need to be unlocked by testpoint ( dismantled ) and therefore expensive to unlock ;)

You do have to sign up to IKEA Family, although that doesn't cost anything and you could get some tokens etc, but I don't understand the bit about T Mobile?

The bit about T-Mobile is that its T- Mobile who are providing the service, therefore there is no problem swapping out the sim.
If you are moving from another network you would need to get an unblocking code, and that can cost you £20 in the case of Orange for example.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • They use the t-mobile network as the carrier of the service. T-mobile effectively let other companies use their service as their own. Virgin uses t-mobile too and 3 use O2 when out of 3G coverage.

virgin might use t-mobile's network but their handsets won't accept the family mobile sim. i've got a virgin handset and it refuses to accept my family mobile sim which arrived today.

need a new phone anyway, seems i will have to either get one from the family mobile site (rubbish selection) or get one on a T-mobile PAYG package which will mean buying another £10 sim that i don't want! hopefully the savings made by using the family mobile account will make up for all this mucking around.
