Hi all
I'm Rebecca but most people know me as Becka. I'm 28 and live just outside Cambridge with my husband Stuart, and work for one of the oldest film archives in the world cataloguing films. I am a self confessed eBay addict - I love sniffing out bargains and paying much less for things than I would in the shops. I'm quite crafty (in the artistic sense!), I collect bat toys and anything batty related really (hence the name!) and I love spending as much time as possible in my beloved adopted home, Devon (we plan on moving to North Devon in the next couple of years so it really becomes home)
I like getting the best value for money that I can (don't we all), but accept that sometimes you have to pay a little more for quality. The trick is knowing how to balance this out

I'm 31, live in yorkshire and have a 2 and a bit yr old son plus husband sharing a 4bedvictorian house we are slowly renovating.
I work p/t and I am in the final year of my undergraduate degree. My partner works f/t and studies p/t.
I grew up with hippy parents so MSOS should be second nature to me! Unfortunatly although I know how to do most things my teenage rebellion was to swear never to be poor like that again!
I'm now realising that MSOS doesn't have to mean you have a miserbale life (no heating, ice on inside of windows, broad beans for every meal because we couldn't afford to buy veg, no new clothes etc etc)
I can cook, sort of sew, and grow veg. I do have a garden but its heayv clay, badly infested with extra resistant aphids and blackfly, polluted with the traffic and resturant air con units over the wall and faces north. (yep you can see why growing veg in THAT is going to be hard!)
I'd love an allotment but dont' have time with 2 days work, 2 days uni and 3 days with toddler.
I'm desperate for us to work out a way to downshift but we can't quite get there yet.DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

Hello
I'm Julia and I live in Cheshire with my husband and cats. My grown up boy
(19) and stepchildren are around sometimes too. I've just turned 43. I'm leaving work at the end of July as I've been ill and need a break before I start an MA course in the autumn. One day that might lead to a good job but in the meantime we'll be skint! I love cooking and doing things old style, so I really enjoy reading these boards. I've found it really hard to get to know like-minded people in the town where I live after moving from my home town four years ago - I'm still homesick! Are there any friendly OSers in mid Cheshire? Julia x0 -
Sorry to hear you still homesick after so long. We used to move every 3 years, up and down the country but glad to say I never got home sick. I always considered where my DH and sons were was home and it was just a trip down a motorway back to whenst we came.
I know it would be more satisfying if you could get to know someone personally near by who is OS but until then you've got everyone on here.
Have been OS most of my married life (and pre marriage thanks to mum and dad) but went a bit off track when business took off. Could never get used to having extra money and have gone back to OS, I feel happier. This may sound really stupid to some of you but once its ingrained into you and you have spent most of your life being OS it's very hard to leave behind. Bit like a comfort blanket.
Good on you for the changes you are making. :T:wave:0 -
Hi,
We are Jill and John.
We took early retirement and moved to France to do a renovation on a barn..so technically we are working harder than ever! Once we'd bought the property we had to spend another 2 years in UK. We spent those 2 years trawling the dump for materials to use over here. You would not believe the stuff we got for pennies. Kitchen units, some white kitchen units that were brand new and ideal for the bathroom, still boxed that someone had obviously over bought but, for whatever reason, hadn't taken them back to the shop, probably couldn't be bothered. A brand new Maki shower door worth hundreds of pounds..the fittings bag not even opened, for five pounds. The list is endless.
It's leaner pickings here as they are not such a throw away society!
I can't believe it was our youngest son who recommended me to this site..he used to complain unmercifully about shop ''own brands'' that I used to buy when he was a kid....he's obviously older and wiser now...thank goodness!!
Looking forward to picking up some more penny saving ideas.
One of the best money saving ideas I ever heard was actually a little saying that you should think about when you go to buy any thing..It's ''What is need and what is want''

Hi All!
I'm 37, married (15 years in August) and have 2 sons aged 10 and 8.
I live in Lincolnshire and don't work, except for spending a few hours a week doing my DHs accounts.
Decided a couple of weeks ago that in order to save money and get better tasting food I was going to buy less ready meals and cook more from scratch.
So far I have got HM Lasagne and HM Shepherd's Pie and some HM stock and HM soup in the freezer and some HM cookies! Not a lot, but it is a start! (Still having to work through all the RM stuff in there first to make some space!)
You seem like a lovely bunch of people on here and I hope you won't tire of my numerous questions!Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

Have been doing my own HM ready meals for the freezor for some time now. I have found the best way to label them is to use decorators masking tape. Easy to write on with felt tip and peels off easy when you have used the container (usually rescued plastic take away containers bought buy sons.)
Also helps if you have a whiteboard near the freezor with each HM ready meal on it so you know what you've got. I also itemise the contents on the whiteboard in blocks which represent each drawer in the freezor. Saves having to pull everything out every time.
I have recently got hooked on trying to sort the house out and get on top of cleaning etc (thanks to flylady thread). Must have got the bug because DH asked if I fancied going to the pictures this afternoon but said I would rather get on with the cleaning :rotfl: :rotfl:
Have a good day everyone. :T:wave:0
