Hi,
My name is Michelle and I like Elvis (hence Shelvis lol).
I am 31 and live in Derbyshire with my husband. We are expecting a miracle baby on 8th Jan next year. Miracle because we were told in Jan this year I was unlikely to concieve naturally and was due to start IVF in August!! Miracles do happen and I concieved naturally in April.
We haven't really got any debt apart from our mortgage as we wer young and foolish and kept whacking all our debts on that. Our mortgage stands at £165,000 and we would like to get it down as soon as we can whilst still saving for emergencies.
I like OS savings and often batch cook and freeze. Cooking is one of my pleasures and talents luckily! We also have a petrol pig (for journeys over and above the norm like if we go out for the day) and a savings giraffe (was mortgage giraffe but now seems to be baby giraffe!)
It's a pleasure to belong to these boards. I have been lurking for years0 -
I'm 35 and I have a son aged 11 and a daughter aged 14, I like to call myself a homemaker as it sounds much nicer than housewife. My husband is 45 and we have been married 16 years, we met when I was 16 and he was 25! We have 2 cats, a female tortie and a ginger tom who are brother and sister, their white with black spots brother was killed by a car last Oct
I also have a black Rex rabbit who is my bundle of love. He enjoys cuddles and licks my hand when I rub his back with the other hand.
I have been OS most of my life really but wouldn't have known what to call it. I always preferred to make cakes and bread etc by hand rather than with gadgets and I don't use chemical cleaners, preferring to make my own or use natural alternatives like White Vinegar and Bicarb. I inherited a lot of cleaners when my MIL died and it was then that my family found out about my natural lifestyle as I passed all the cleaners on to my mum. They thought it was a bit weird I think but I didn't care! I also make all my own personal hygeine preps including soap and deoderant. I'm going to start making mineral makeup sometime too now that I have sampled someone elses which was really nice.
I'm vegetarian, hankering to be vegan but so far only managed a monthlong stint back in September, when I went raw vegan. Bit of a change of lifestyle there! I have never before or since felt so healthy and buzzing with enzymes and energy. I know I can do vegan cooked if I really want but I'm not ready to give up eggs and cheese full time yet, in the meantime I have raw food sometimes to keep my hand in. Once I save up for a dehydrator things will be easier!
My mum calls me an earth mother because of the natural approach, I bf'd both my kids till 13 months and used cloth nappies too. I secretly hope this attitude is rubbing off onto my kids and that when they are starting families of their own they do things the natural way.
Anyway nice to meet you all!IAAR/IAAMM/MFTMFAQ/IOA6BH0 -
Hi,
I've been scuffing around the forums for a few weeks now so I thought I'd say hello.
I'm from SE Scotland and our household consists of me, hubby, a demented 14-year old cat and three hens.
I naturally graviated towards OS, but it's now becoming more important than ever as I've just given up a well-paid job to go back to university to do a PhD - and have taken a 75% pay-cut in the process - gulp!
My user-name? Well I've got 7 weeks to save the universe, or at least to get myself and the household organised before life begins again as a student.
Er, um, that's it for now folks,
Cheers

Blimey, I've been trundling around these forums for ages and never even spotted this thread, guess I oughta post huh?
I'm from the Highlands and live with OH and a small much-loved menagerie.
I'm a vet but we're expecting our first baby very, very soon so enjoying maternity leave for now.
We only bought a house a year ago, and the baby came as a bit of a shock, and I'm the bigger earner, so money is tight tight tight! Thankfully I'd already been introduced to the ways of OS and MS in general while looking into buying the house. I hate waste and I hate spending when I could be saving, and I hate working as hard as I have had to for it to be wasted. I'm lucky that my only debt (apart from the mortgage) is the £20k SLC loan I had to take to live on while I studied. No more debts, ever again!
Loving those OS ways0 -
Hi I'm Kathryn, aged 39, married with one son. We live in sunny Lancashire and I'm very interested in adopting the OS way of life to both save money and live a simpler less materialistic life. We've constantly put debt on the mortgage which now stands at a scary £1050 per month. I don't work due to health problems so money is very tight and I need help to sort it. I'm also very very disorganised and our house is full of clutter and usually in need of a good clean and tidyup - this forum was made for me2025 - Declutter to Move House

Hi all
Love this site, came onto MSE look for mortgage help, and am now a newbie flylady!
I'm 28, live half at my flat with 2 cats, Dave and Noodle, and half with my OH and his 7 yr old son. I work as an IT Project Manager in sunny Brighton, and love it
I think I'm pretty OS - my great love is cooking - everything has to be from scratchI also love rooting around charity shops and bargain shopping... (my debt problems have arisen from too much bargain shopping :-S not helped by unexpected moving issues 2 years ago...) However, thanks to these forums I am starting to feel so much more in control
Yay!

Im now retired but more busy than if I was at work earning a few pounds,
Son working away and I have been grass cutting/weeding house cleaning /spare car washing, etc plus round trip is 44 miles,, All for the costly sum of Love he tells me,
grand daughter would like me to sort her garden out, need car to get there/petrol. and my pc has gone wrong, my car needs a service, which son said in May he would do, asked about it the other night, answer was, tbh I really don't want to spend my holiday sorting out your car and pc when Im back home, so he is the looser if it fails the MOT end august, as I don't have a partner, whats the answer, as im Living on £167 per week,They all seem to want help but not return any, advice please,0 -
I've been a contented lurker for 18 months, never having a need to post before as I've always found an answer or three on the forums
. The biggest change for us is aquiring a handsome pup a couple of months ago, to join a gorgeous green iguana who lives under the stairs!
Our house is a mate magnet for my three lads that began in their school years & doesn't seem to be lessening now they all work-hence the monica, coz most of them have known me almost as long as my own boys have:rotfl: Thankfully combustion engines attached to any amount of wheels has always been an interest, so the conversations rarely get boring!
I would like a total change of direction in my life, so currently studying for an ECDL qualification while on long term sick leave from a f/t job. As for MS & OS......is there any other way?
Many thanks for your help & advice, & long may you continue.xFull time Carer for Mum; harassed mother of three;loving & loved by two 4-legged babies.
