Hi all, I'm quite new to MSE and I love the old style board. Have picked up so many good ideas over the past few days, so I thought I may as well take the plunge and introduce myself properly so I can get to know you all. I am married to my DH who is currently out of work : ( So more than anything at the moment I need to find ways of helping those pennies stretch a little further. We have a gorgeous six year old daughter. I must admit I already cook most of our meals from scratch as I find you tend to get tastier, healthier food and it costs less too. Our shopping bill has more than halved since I've been doing this!!!!! At the moment we're trying to save up for a nice holiday next year as well as trying to get some money put aside for christmas and decorating and this years holiday spending money too!!!!! Hoping I'll find loads of inspiration here!!! Looking forward to getting to know you all!!!

Trying to "up" my income and rookie oldstyler
  • Hi everyone, I'm a newbie... :D

I live with my OH, have no kids (but do have 6 cats), and have just bought a house  . I would like to learn more about how to save money and spend less on things we don't really need. I'm currently growing some of my own veggies and herbs, and would like to be as self sufficient as I can be (I'm a bit of a hippy). I'm sick of wasting money, food and energy.

    Hi All

Not new to MSE or OS, but only recently started posting on the Daily.

My name is Hazel, I'm 41 and married. Up until a year ago I had a very demanding job for a large multi national company (the largest privately owned company in the world, in fact). I worked in HR, but was responsible for implementing common systems across the world.

I loved my job, was very good at it, and had a good salary. Hoewver, the constant travel made my time at home very precious. Got to the stage where I didn't want to go away on holiday, as I'd rather enjoy the time at home.

I stopped working a year ago, at the same time as my husband retired. Our income is 1/3rd of what it was. OS is important to me because although my husbands pension is linked to inflation, the real value of the money will go down and I don't get MY pension until I'm 60.

I love OS. We cook almost everything from scratch, make our own bread, butter, sausages, baked beans, ketchup, jam etc. My non OS weaknesses are Patak's curry sauces (although Curry Queen's recipes are easily as good, we only occasionally get round to batch cooking them), and Gu puddings. And lots of wine.

We grow plenty of vegetables and fruit and in the spring and summer spend most of our life in the garden. Either gardening, or sitting in it enjoying the sun.

OS has taught me to use vinegar as my main cleaner and how to make good use of leftovers. It's also taught me not to just buy something because I think I want it. I look for alternatives, I think about it for a while, and if I still want it I shop around first. It's also taught me to look after the pennies, and I'm really proud to be saving pin money.

It's also taught me how generous and resourceful people can be, and it's really made me appreciate how lucky I am to be where I am. I've taken so many tips and ideas from the OS board, and the level of support that is so freely given is breathtaking. It's so different to any of the other MSE boards.

    Thanks for everything

  • Hi All,

Been reading this site for a couple of years now but have just 'discovered' the OS part which has inspired me to join the forum.

I'm 29 (for the next few weeks anyway!), married with a 3 year old son. Both me and hubby work full time and initially thought OS would take up a lot of time to organise/carry out but have since discovered that isn't the case. We are now happily:
    - using stardrops/vinegar/soda crystals,
    - planning our meals properly (have always cooked from scratch but rubbish at planning/shopping which has led to some 'eclectic' meals in the past  )
    - growing our own strawberries, lettuce, spring onions and chives in the garden (hopefully they grow ok - we're usually as green-fingered as napalm...)
    - doing the 'own-brand' challenge to cut our grocery bills.

Oh, and our breadmaker is on the way

Nice talking to you all :j
