    Hi

My mum went into Natwest today to request a chip and signature card, they were completly unaware of these and told her chip and pin was teh only thing. This was even the managers response. Is there anything written down anyway that coudl be taken in to show the bank to prove that anyone is entitled to chip and signature?

    Thanks

    Katie
  • You could try taking in a printout of this article:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4058405.stm

Best I can suggest! But it does specifically mention NatWest, might embarrass the manager.

Chip & Signature cards are a reality and a product that exists, therefore, cardholders (IMHO) are failing to comply with the Banking Code articles 2 and 3.1 by failing to tell consumers about this product (Chip & Signature) and how that product works.

Using the term "Chip & Signature," on the https://www.cardwatch.org.uk or https://www.chipandpin.co.uk websites produces next to nothing.

The most comprehnsive adivice is available from the Sense website, use this and information from the RNIB website if you want to embarrass your local Manager. It is more than likely your local Branch Manager is just as much in the dark as you are. Information on the availability of Chip & Signature cards is not filtering down from above, hence the breach of the Banking Code.

Remember it's the individuals perception if they can manage a PIN and not the card issuers. No medical evidence is required and you do not have to divulge why a PIN cannot be managed.

The RNIB and SENSE I'm sure would like to learn of your Mums experience.
  • these new post office bank accounts are doing these old dears no better than the original benefit books.

they put in their cards, say the pin aloud as they type it in then take it all out at once like theyve always done, ready for the scally round the corner....

    :(
:T The best things in life are FREE! :T
  • The new Banks accounts for benifits aint to stop people getting mugged..its to save them 3-4 million quid a year on printing the books.

its only the oldies of today that will be upset by this change as when everyone else gets there it will be the Norm...

    Zetecauto,

Fraud at cashpoints climbed by 82% in 2004. You might not have noticed but you need a PIN to get money from a cashpoint, oh and of course the genuine OR counterfeit card.

The Post Office Card Account and Basic Bank accounts fail to offer these 'old dears,' the facility to sign for their cash. I find this disgusting and I wonder how the DRC views these products. Even credit and debit cards, the majority of which are Chip and PIN, in order to comply with the DDA offer Chip and Signature cards as an alternative to using a PIN. PO and Basic Bank accounts are PIN only!

I wonder if your views will change when you get a wee bit older, or you suffer from some sort of memory loss, or if you'v changed several of your cards to work with the same PIN and your hit by a fraudster.

One has to ask, is it safer for individuals to have a PIN or continue to sign. In an awful lot of cases, it's much safer to sign!

Have Banks and Card Issuers been misleading us all?

CARD users unable to remember different card numbers or who are worried about security, can ask their bank or card issuer for a chip and signature card, so they can continue to sign for purchases.

Apacs says it is not necessary to be disabled or to suffer from an impairment such as short-term memory loss to be entitled to ask for an alternative card. More than 100,000 new chip and signature cards have already been issued.

So Money Savers If you fall into the above category and have difficulty getting hold of Chip & Signture Cards email press@apacs.org.uk or call 020 7711 6316 (pevious posting).
