What about the baggage handler who has to lift your 'overweight' bag?
Or the carousel system that may be more prone to breakdowns under heavier loads?
If both your bags could be packed below the 15kg limit, it makes sense to even them up.

jesus, is this the ryanair shareholders club or something.

Has anybody read this and not seen the lunacy of it?

Husband has 13kg, Wife has 16kg.

An overweight bag for handling purposes used to be 32kg. The Health and Safety Executive has recommended that 23kg limit be imposed.

16kg is not anywhere close to this.

It's already clear to me that Ryanair likes to make its passengers feel like impoverished scum, but why?

What is the point of inconveniencing not just the boarding passengers, but the entire queue behind them in order that they can shift their underwear from one bag to another. It serves no revenue raising function, it just reinforces your view that next time if Ryanair is £50 and British Airways is £79, you'll take British Airways instead (actually with Ryanair's fees £79 is probably cheaper anyway).

If you've got a choice between say £500 to Bangkok on Etihad or £512 on Qatar, then people will go for the £500 option. But when you see the dreaded 'Ryanair' on even a short flight, you'll think twice before going for it, and think 'how much more am I willing to pay not to be treated like scum'. Pretty much every other airline is able to get passengers by being slightly cheaper. But Ryanair has to be MUCH cheaper.

the ryanair thing which makes travellers miserable is the boarding situation which can get out of hand, yes thats ryanairs fault, along with all those social class a-c people.

ryanair is the airline with the most affluent customers, yep thats true, and them !!!!!!s can push and shove with the rest of us

Although the OP travelled RyanAir, other carriers operate under the same rules.

BMIBaby & Jet2 don't allow luggage pooling, even if you're travelling on the same confirmation number.
These 2 carriers and RyanAir explain this fact on their website, so I can't see how it should come as a shock when checking in.

I must admit that I think this is a daft policy.
If 2 people are travelling together and one case is 14kg and the other is 16kg, I can't see the point in transferring stuff from one case to the other.

I'm happy to revise this opinion if anyone can come up with a good reason for this though.

The 23kg limit has got nothing to do with this.
RyanAir are at liberty to impose any baggage limit they wish to.
It's entirely the individual's choice whether to choose to fly with Ryanair.
If you can find a similar flight cheaper or don't want to fly with RyanAir either because of principles or you feel that you are treated like 'scum' then that's your choice entirely.

I've had a number of cheap city breaks with RyanAir and whilst I agree that the experience is not up to the class of Singapore Airlines, they're not actually competing for the same market are they?
I've had trouble-free, on-time flights and certainly didn't feel I was treated like 'scum'.

I usually go and have a coffee and wait until the queue has practically gone - once I saw it reducing, looked at a paper in WHSmiths for about a minute and then looked up to see it had gone, so had to run over to make sure I got on board LOL.

This isn't the shareholders club, its just that most people here realise that to get the best out of ryanair you've got to read the t&c, yet some expect that they don't need to bother (I wonder if they sign all their legal contract, credit cards, etc without browsing the t&c to ensure they are getting what they expect).

As to prices & alternatives, well there can be many factors. Usually for me Ryanair airports are further away, so if another airline is a bit more, but more convenient I'll go that way. Though I usually find a ryanair £50 flight is £100+ on BA.

Went to tenerife via Girona with Ryanair last November which required a hotel going out (return had a few hours in between), but even though I had to pay the extras for four flights (baggage, check-in, booking fee) plus a hotel, the total for two of us was cheaper than the flight cost for one person with any other airline (had scoured budget airlines, charter airlines (tomas cook, apro, etc), even scheduled like Iberia).

at the end of the day the flight is still cheap as chips.

Quite literally - I know I'm not the only one here who's flown across Europe and back for £2.02. A portion from the local chippy is £2.00 .

You have to know the rules and play the game... there are just as many opportunities for the savvy consumer (which by implication most of us are on MSE) to screw Ryanair over and there are for the reverse.

In the OP's case, there was no financial loss incurred, or even any real inconvenience - it doesn't sound like they got a particularly cheap flight, but by their own admission saved time and money by using Ryanair's flightpath... I guess it comes down to Luxury vs Moneysaving, and I know which website I'm on! :p

EDIT TO ADD: Sorry, forgot to mention - the last time I took luggage on a Ryanair flight, my friend and I scuttled up to one of the empty checking-in desks and used it to weigh our bags ahead of actually queuing up to check in. We had to do a bit of stuff-swapping too (we had a 5-month-old with us so the limit was tight), but we sorted it out before it could become an issue. I'm not slating the OP for not doing this - just suggesting it as a moneysaving solution for the future :)

I was just having a wee grumble to myself.... :D Some people on this site are very predictable, sometimes you don't even need to read the posts to know what they contain..... :rotfl: :rotfl:

Still not very specific is it, PandaPants?

If I'm the one who is
very predictable, sometimes you don't even need to read the posts to know what they contain.....
then I will still continue to speak as I find and say that I've had cheap flights with Ryanair & not been treated as 'scum' by Ryanair.
And I will still say that the additional charges levied by Ryanair are detailed on their website so shouldn't come as a shock to anyone.

And I still say that I think their policy of not pooling luggage for passengers travelling on the same reservation is a bit daft.

If you find that predictable, then don't read my replies.
