Ryanair being just damn silly

Just flown with Ryanair, my wife and I with a case each. Ryanair have imposed a rather low 15KG baggage limit "with no sharing". So, on the way out we carefully weighed each case and evened out the contents. On the way back, we had exactly the same stuff, but packed a bit more in one case than the other. Consequently, one case was just over the 15KG limit. We were then asked to open up our cases and even them up. The Ryanair official at least had the grace to look embarrassed.
I avoid Ryanair where I can. They are not nearly as cheap as they make out, the service is !!!!-poor, and they have all their little 'extras'. Reminds me of the landlord from Les Mis:
Charge 'em for the lice
Extra for the mice
Two percent for looking in the mirror twice
Here a little slice
There a little cut
Three percent for sleeping with the window shut
When it comes to fixing prices
There are a lot of tricks he knows
How it all increases
All those bits and pieces
Jesus! It's amazing how it grows!

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

What about the baggage handler who has to lift your 'overweight' bag?
Or the carousel system that may be more prone to breakdowns under heavier loads?
If both your bags could be packed below the 15kg limit, it makes sense to even them up.0 -
I suspect you were given the opportunity to 'even up' the cases rather than being asked to pay excess baggage charges for the one that was over 15kg.0

Yet another Ryanair hypocrite ...
You avoid Ryanair, but you still use them.
You cannot follow simple guidelines, but that isn't your fault, it is the fault of Ryanair.
If you dislike them so much, why not just fly with another airline?Gone ... or have I?0 -
I wondered how long it would be, before another ryanair topic popped upRyanair have imposed a rather low 15KG baggage limit
As do most other airlines, like xl, thomascook, if you want extra weight with these companies, then you pay for it, if you want meals on flights you pay for them.0 -
Nobody but Ryanair flying to Kerry from London. Had there been, I would probably not have used them. We paid just over £100 return to Kerry, but I would happily have paid 50% more for a better travel experience.
As to the question of the poor baggage handler, I have sympathy with people doing this sort of job. However, my one overweight bag was 16KG. Until recently, the Ryanair limit was 20KG, and the maximum (with extra payment) was 30KG.
There is a reasonable argument for trying to get people to reduce their baggage, but where a couple is flying it makes no sense to require them to pack two cases rather than one. It actually increased the total weight carried as each of our bags was around 5 KGs, whereas we could have got the lot into one large case weighing 6 KGs. So, Ryanair actually increased their load by 4 KGs.
The real point was that I just wanted to warn people that Ryanair are being plain silly over applying their baggage limit. I think that Ryanair may only be a viable proposition if you can manage with hand luggage. Unfortunately, I have to take some medical equipment with me, so that's my hand luggage limit gone.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Until recently, the Ryanair limit was 20KG,
how recent was this change,0 -
At least you got the chance to re-pack, if you had posted that you were charged excess baggage with no chance to even it out then I might have had some sympathy.

I must confess to being confused by that paragraph, was this on the same trip?Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

I'm wondering this as well - or maybe it only applied to the OP?
Edit: Have just found a booking made on 22/11/2006, which states the following:The checked baggage allowance is 15kg per person (no infant allowance).
No pooling/sharing of baggage allowances is permitted, even for passengers travelling together on the same reservation.
I am now very interested on what the OP classes as recently?Gone ... or have I?0 -
I fail to see any justification for the complaint. Ryanair allow 15kg for chekced bags. They charge for them to encourage passengers to use cabin baggage only. There seems to be no ambiguity.
We have flown Ryanair many times. We travel with cabin baggage only, which is 10kg each. We find that plenty for a week or even 10 days in Spain for summer. It is also plenty for a 4-5 day winter break.
If people took a bit more care when packing, and were ruthless about not taking unnecessary junk with them, their lives would be much easier. You simply do not need a fresh wardrobe twice a day. Airlines are certain to get much tougher over the ridiculous amounts of baggage some people insist on taking, so best get used to it.;)0
